John le Carré - the author considers the following his best novels:

* The Spy Who Came in from the Cold
* Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
* The Tailor of Panama
* The Constant Gardener

Read the first. Working on the second. Intend to finish three and four. Great stories.

The One That Got Away by James Leasor (Smashwords) - the true story of Franz von Werra, the only German prisoner of war to escape and return to Germany after being captured by the Allies. I read this years ago in paper. His son is working on releasing all his books as e-books.

I'm not sure if this will fit your criteria, but The Losing Role by Steve Anderson (Smashwords) is a fictional story about a German participant in Operation Grief, where Germans dressed in US uniforms during the Battle of the Bulge.

Not really an escape story, but likely to be of interest: The One That Got Away by Chris Ryan is the true story of an SAS trooper who evaded capture during the 1991 Gulf War (the rest of his patrol were captured).

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised to find that The Wooden Horse and Great Escape Stories, both by Eric Williams, are available as e-books. Great Escape Stories is available as a free Nook Book.

Louis L'Amour's _Last of the Breed_ (story of a cold-war era pilot captured and held in a prison camp in Siberia from which he must escape) may fit your criteria for this --- I really enjoyed it, but having been in the Air Force and being interested in archery, it pushes a bunch of my buttons.

Don't overlook the Colditz stories by Pat Reid. Sadly, they don't seem to be in legit ebook formats, but there are many paperbacks and hard covers of them.

I've just started reading "Rogue Raider" by Nigel Barley. It is about the exploits of Julius Lauterbach, a prize captain from S.M.S. Emden. Lauterbach managed to escape from imprisonment in Singapore in 1915 and get back to Germany. He may have been involved in the Singapore mutiny of 1915.

Another not-quite-an-escape-story you might like is James Clavell's "King Rat." Allied prisoners doing what they have to do to survive in a WWII Japanese prison camp after the fall of Singapore.

Clavell was a prisoner of war of the Japanese, in Singapore. The books is based on his experiences.

In addition to the Paul Brickhill book that has already been suggested, Tim Carroll's The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III is a more recent account of the same mass escape of 76 officers from the supposedly escape-proof camp in March 1944.
