Has anyone fixed the inner parts activated by the power button?

I've had my PRS-505 for a little over 4 years now. At some point last month, the power button stopped working on my reader. I would slide it, and nothing would happen. This is without having dropped it, so I had no idea what could have caused it to break.

I then received a new battery for the holidays (yay!) and proceeded to open up my reader to replace the original. While I was sliding the innards in and out, a tiny little black piece of plastic became detached from one of the 2 parts that get pushed by the power slide button.

Has anyone successfully fixed this before? It is a very tiny piece, whose purpose was to push inward into a narrow slot at the same time as the white plasctic piece is suppose to be moved to the side.

I've been getting by, by using a thin wire to push in where the black plastic piece would have. I am wary of gluing, because the piece could get glued to the slot or something else (it's really tiny!).

Any suggestions would be welcome! Thank you!

Last time I bought Sony repair parts I got them directly from Sony, but I just looked and it seems like they stopped selling them directly. They appear to be using a couple of distributors, according to this:

I'd start with the Sony number first, then the distributors.

See if you can get a repair manual, then you'll have a parts number, which greatly simplifies the process of ordering.

Thanks for the tip! I did find the Sony number. I will call them as soon as I can, but I'm also worried that they will tell me it will cost a lot of money (and that I might as well just buy a new reader since they are selling them cheaper now!). I'll try those distributors too, thanks!

Try eBay. Maybe you can find a 505 with a broken screen you can use to fix yours. Also try the fleamarket on MR. Maybe someone has a 505 with a broken screen and is willing to sell it.

Here is one for parts..

Glad to help. Note that it's the repair parts number, i.e. not the repair number. When I've been able to obtain Sony parts they have been reasonably priced (e.g. a couple of bucks for a switch for my stereo). The issue is usually if they sell the part you want separately as opposed only as part of a larger assembly (e.g. the whole "printed wiring board" for $200 instead of one IC).

Good luck! And +1 on the "parts donor" idea JSW posted, if you can't get the individual bit.

Bob
