Since you've removed DRM, try converting it to PRC/Mobi and back to epub. That might scrub out the Kobo-ization.
I came to this thread because of the same issue. Towards the bottom of the comments in the link you provided, Kobo has apparently acknowledged the issue and will fix it. Hopefully that is soon.

There is a folder CSS which contains the Kobo CSS and there is a template CSS. Both attached to this message. Can anyone fix it?
Are you able to edit the file kobo.css? If so, what happens if you change line #8 from
Code:
font-size: 18pt !important;
to
Code:
font-size: 1em !important;

I have the same problem. I downloaded a book from kobobooks for my Sony 650. The font is huge so I emailed Kobo and after waiting a week with no reply, I called them. Explained the situation and the customer service rep had no suggestions and said she would pass the question on. They contacted me by email yesterday, and asked me for the name of the book and the author's name and a photograph of the large font (which I cannot reduce). I sent this to them and I will wait and see what happens. i am not interested in reformatting. I paid for the book and I think it should be readable. I don't want to do anything other than read the darn book! I can't read it the way it is..... the font is just huge. I have downloaded about 150 books from Sony and Kobobooks with no problem. I see this as Kobo's problem and if they don't either fix it or give me a refund, I am done with Kobo. Won't buy another thing from them. Today I downloaded a free "sample" of the book from Amazon to my husband's Kindle and the font is perfect.

It's a problem at Kobo. They are modifying the wrong copies. Another thread says that you can try redownloading as Kobo are fixing things and maybe the book you bought has been fixed. Some people have gotten a proper version redownloading.

I have tried re-downloading and I will try again after a while in case they fix it. Surely Kobo is aware that their customers will be leery of downloading (and paying!) for more books after they have had this experience. I will post again when I have info on how this plays out.

Keep trying your purchases periodically. A few (but not all) of mine have been fixed.

I got my hopes up when I read this, and tried downloading again but no joy for my two books. The incident I opened with kobo 2 weeks ago has now been escalated to tier 2 as tier 1 cannot give refunds. I have bought a lot of books from kobo, and if they would just give refunds when a problem was reported, I would try them again in the future. BUT all of this hassle is just not worth it. I am definitely in the camp of, I just want to buy or borrow from the library, download and read. I don't really want another tech challenge in my life.
I will continue to try downloading, but at this point I just want a refund and to buy the books elsewhere.
Good luck all!

That's exactly how I feel, Lorif. I've decided I'm just going to purchase my books from Sony and a few other niche sources from now on. There is little incentive with agency pricing to shop around. I have a hard time finding books to use coupons on. I have been buying from Kobo since they were called Shortcovers so I have quite a large library accummulated there too.

It's too bad the epub pushers don't have a 7-day return period like Amazon. It's utterly bizzare to me that these companies can get away selling you a completely deffective product but leave you with no means of returning/cancelling the purchase (other than long Custerm 'service' hassle.)

When I contacted Kobo about this problem I was instructed to delete the book from my ereader and online account, then redownload it. It didn't fix the problem and when I suggested they contact the publisher and refund me I was given a store credit only (which I'm yet to use).

Update.... I tried several times to re-download the problem book. Finally succeeded today to change the font. Kobobook's customer service was abysmal. I wrote several emails, sent a picture of the problem, and talked to them on the phone. Finally it did work, but with no suggestions or explanation from Kobo. Even although the problem is now resolved, I will not buy from them again. Don't need the aggravation!

Yes or at least the option of downloading the first chapter should be standard (I don't buy many books from Kobo but I'm sure I've downloaded sample chapters from them).

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm wondering whether the EU Distance Selling directive apply. I know Kobo are in the US but I'm sure that sale in Europe are subject to European law.
