Congress drops SOPA, PIPA still alive

U.S. President Barak Obama publicly condemned the proposed SOPA legislation for the first time over the weekend, and Congress responded by dropping the bill, at least for now. SOPA, or the Stop Online Piracy Act, was presented as a tool to help stop online intellectual property theft, although opponents to the bill said it would give the government control over the content Internet users can view.

In response to online petitions against the SOPA legislation, the President said even though he sees online piracy from foreign websites as a problem, he won’t support any bill that erodes freedom of speech or expression, or that potentially threatens online security.

While SOPA may be on the back burner for now, a similar bill called the Protect IP Act (PIPA) is still working its way through the Senate.

In response to both SOPA and PIPA, House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) launched what he’s calling the Keep The Web OPEN Project to underscore the importance of a free and open Internet and to offer up alternative legislation for protecting intellectual property while avoiding online censorship.

Don't worry, Hollywood will find a way to put a new coat of paint on it and buy the politicians all over again. (It's an election year, Politicians need to double dip to pay for the campaigns.)

SOPA is not gone. It is on a back burner. this means they can still bring it back after they think everyone has forgotten about it.

Problem is, there are some good republicans, and quite a few democrats were behind SOPA as well. Both party has crap people. Politicians are the problem, not which ever party they claim to be in.

PIPA hasn't been dropped by Congress yet! We have one more target we need to work on.

But it's the head of the republicans who is very dangerous to the USA. And overall, they are against anything that's actually good for the working class people.

Won't happen while it is just Republicans being bashed.

I am trying to not let things go down the bashing path. Both parties have people who backed this, so neither side is blameless. With that in mind, you cannot bash one side and not the other without being hypocritical. Best to just say that everyone needs improvement and move on.

Now, hopefully PIPA can get knocked down too. And remember, it can always be brought back another session if it gets totally defeated. We've not seen the last of this.

while SOPA is indeed evil i just wish there had been this level of internet outrage against the outright fascistic NDAA....which was signed by a democrat president. indefinite detention of american citizens without charge,trial or representation is pretty anti-working class. just sayin'.....


this is indeed good news but those against it can't rest until its dead, not just put aside for "reexamination".
