I gather this is a completely bi-partisan effort. Lamar Smith - R is leading the drive in the House, and apparently Patrick Leahy - D is spearheading it in the Senate.

Wikipedia blackout to protest SOPA progress in Congress
"Most people probably haven't paid much attention to the huge corporations waging war in Washington, D.C., over legislation designed to crack down on theft of movies, music and other content from the Internet. But the conflict will hit consumers in the face Wednesday, when Wikipedia and a growing number of other websites intend to go dark to protest the proposed changes. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced Monday that the hugely popular online encyclopedia would shut down to protest the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and related legislation, which opponents say could kill websites without due process." http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/ente...signed-to.html |

Let's face it ...
USA is, if not the biggest, one of the biggest Internet users in the world. If something is approved here, will have a cascade effect. That regulations is all about money, not the users. There are other ways to fight aganist piracy. And no matter what, will be there. It is virtually impossible to stop online piracy. Every new attempt to block it will result in different approaches to overcome the patch. All this makes me think in that woman here in USA that had to pay several millions of dollars (or at least was sued) because she download couple of mp3 songs from an illegal site. Do they really think that a medium class woman will have resources to pay such ridiculous demand? How many thousands the records companies spent just prosecuting her? And I'm almost sure the site is still online or renamed. Last edited by jocampo; 01-17-2012 at 05:40 PM. |

Thing is, the global companies in question are based within the country that the legislation would cover, thus directly impacting them, and potentially the world. Based on what I know of SOPA/PIPA and how the 'net works, if a site in the US gets blocked in the manner discussed, that block could potentially propagate to non US DNS servers, thus taking it down for other countries as well.

Google will protest SOPA using popular home page
"Google, the Web's top search company and one of technology's most influential powers in Washington, will post a link on its home page tomorrow to notify users of Google's opposition to controversial antipiracy bills being debated in Congress. The company confirmed in a statement that it will join Wikipedia, Reddit, and other influential tech firms in staging protests of varying kinds against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), which are backed by big entertainment and media interests." http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-57...lar-home-page/ |

Wikipedia is now down. Life as we know it has now come to a sreeching halt. For the next 24 hours, darkness will be our companion.
But wait, Google is showing their support by staying open. Could there be a Wikipedia alternative lurking out there just waiting to be discovered? Thank god for Google. Mine eyes have been opened and the darkness lifted. Hallelujah! |

I'm disappointed, I thought most of the giants of the web were going to black out their pages for a day. But the only one who dared was Wikipedia.
