Stitchawl has 3 out of the 5, so I'll turn the quiz over to him. If anyone wants to guess on the other answers I'll wait until tomorrow before I tell you the answers.

Their clam chowder is indeed clear, but it is also made with a clam called a "quahog" that is indigenous to Rhode Island. I like the clams, but clam chowder without cream is just wrong. Luckily, even most places in RI serve the NE style too. By the way, RI is in NE.

Their hot dogs are called "Hot Weiners" or "New York Systems". Apparently some Greek guys started selling them here way back in the day, and they called them New York Systems to give them an air of authenticity, but they had no connection to NY. The hot dogs are similar to the Coney Island hot dogs sold in Detroit (which were also sold by Greeks not from NY). They're smaller than a normal hot dog, have a squirt of mustard, a meat sauce on top, some chopped onions, and garlic salt. They're not bad, but they also have a hot dog place up here called "Spike's Junkyard Dogs" that roughly follows the Chicago style, but are served on freshly made buns that are outstanding (no poppy seeds). Best hot dogs I've ever eaten and I've lived in Chicago. New York's hot dogs suck.

The pizza is Rhode Island is awful. They actually serve three styles here. The first is as Stitchawl described long, thin, an cold. They're pretty much just thick pizza dough with tomato sauce on top. They're made in Italian bakeries and are called "pizza strips". I can't stand the stuff. The pizza place that routinely gets voted as the best pizza in RI is a place called Caserta's. If you remember back to grade school when they made pizza on those big square aluminum sheets then you've tasted this pizza before. Awful! The third style they are known for is actually pretty good. A couple decades ago a place called Alforno's started serving a grilled pizza (yes, they grill it). Now they're are a few places up here serving grilled pizza. I actually like this stuff.

What about the milkshake and the lemonade?

I'll turn the questions over to anyone else with one. Time for the Sandman to visit my house...

I'll be darned, Stitchawl is 4 for 5. In Rhode Island they call their milkshakes "Cabinets" and coffee flavored cabinets have long been the go to flavor. Back in the 1880s to 1900s the milkshake in the U.S. was quite a bit different than it is today. It was primarily milk with flavoring that was shaken together with ice. When milkshakes made with ice cream started to become popular in the U.S. the new formula replaced the old formula because the old formula had fallen out of vogue. However, in RI the old formula was still quite popular, so they started calling the new milkshakes "cabinets", because they had to get the ice cream out of the ice cream cabinet (a cold well built into soda fountains).

The lemonade is one of my favorite food items from Rhode Island. Instead of a glass of lemonade made with lemon flavored sugar water in basically an ice tea glass, Rhode Islanders do it different. Their lemonade is basically a lemonade slushy, but it is really good. The ice is super fine and when you drink it the ice stays infused with the lemon flavor. Cheap slushies just turn into a chunk of ice after you drink the flavoring, but some how the RI lemonade resists this tendency. It is also made with real lemons, and you will occasionally get some lemon zest, or even a seed, in your lemonade. You might as well count on getting a brain freeze at some point as well, because it tastes so good that you can't help drinking it a little faster than you should.

Answer to Bonus Question-- they actually had a vote in RI to pick the state's drink. There were basically two contenders -- RI lemonade and coffee milk. The lemonade just barely lost (Del's lemonade is the big vendor up here and during the summer there are stands on just about every block). Coffee Milk is kind of like chocolate milk but is made with coffee syrup. Coffee is actually a pretty big deal here in RI. Seattle may have Starbucks, but RI hase coffee milk, coffee cabinets, iced coffees and Dunkin Donuts.

Let's see if world foods, rather than USA'ian foods gets more play...

What countries are associated with the following foods?
Balut
Larbgai
Poutine
Bakso
Donburi
Spanakopita
Mokeka
Shchi
Laksa
Bulgogi

By the way, all of the above are eaten daily, rather than as specialty foods.

Well... technically it's an Indonesian dish. Delicious! But it is common to find it being served in Malaysia and S'pore. (Personally, I prefer the S'pore version.) As to why it was served in a Thai restaurant... because it tastes good? I'll bet the Thai restaurant wasn't IN Thailand though... It is quite in the same vein as Tom Yum soups so I guess it would make sense though.

We'll give you 'Malaysia' as the correct answer. That's three. Seven more and you're a winner! Get 'em in there before everybody else wakes up!!

Billi, out of all of them, the only one I can't eat is the Balut. The others are delicious, usually eaten daily in their native countries, some are so common they are sold by street vendors in pushcarts! Only one of them is just a bit pricey... something for a Sunday dinner for the family. Common, ordinary daily fare. And as I said before, other than the Balut, all can be really, really delicious!

Some are so common in their countries that I would guess when I'm in those countries I eat them at least once a week, and in some cases 3-4 times a week!

Donburi is so popular that one of the oldest chain restaurants (est. 1899!) has restaurants in; United States (Arizona, California, Las Vegas, and New York City) Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia!
