Do you use Calibre? If so, the easiest way is to enter the series order in the Calibre metadata for each book, then use a Calibre plugboard to automatically prefix the series name and number to the title of each book.

Best to ask for more details in the Calibre forum if you need more information. It's a method which works extremely well; I use it to order all the different series I have on my Kindle.

Hehe, downloading that batch took out a third of my battery. That collection of 87th Precint novels is now officially "The Motherload".

Thanx I do have Calibre, although I use it sparingly. Usually I download some books, read them and forget about them. I will look into it more closely, still have lots of books to read but I guess i will go through one of the McBain books just to see what it is all about.

What would be really interesting to know is how many copies (is that relevant for e-books?) Amazon sold during that one day sale. I think it was some kind of marketing experiment. Not that I'm complaining.

What I do a lot of times is create a separate file with the order list and throw it into a collection along with the books. Here's a real quick one in Mobi and ePub for the 87th Precinct.
Attached Files
File Type: mobi 87th Precinct Series - Ed McBain.mobi (29.7 KB, 198 views)
File Type: epub 87th Precinct Series - Ed McBain.epub (3.0 KB, 213 views)

One thing folks could do is buy a gift card and apply it to their account to avoid CC problems.

Excellent suggestion. It also avoids all those small transactions crowding up your bank statement.

I like to buy a $50 gift card to control my spending, also

2) There MAY be a limit on the total number that Amazon can sell, which means their allotment MIGHT run out if too many digital units are sold.

------

To avoid issue #1, I'm buying mine in 10-unit purchases (10 clicks) and then wait about 1/2 hour before buying another 10-unit purchase (another 10 clicks).

I've just now bought 10.

Don
I have an Amazon card and they really, really don't care how many purchases you make at Amazon at a time. Rather than see 35 sales on my credit card statement, though, I just grabbed a gift card (via email) first, applied it within a minute of ordering, then one-clicked my way thru the entire list.

For other stores, I've found gift cards invaluable, as they cards end up locked after so many pre-authorizations (which some use even for free purchases) or a lot of <$1 purchases that happen quickly (as the harlequin buyers are finding).

They sold enough so far for the books to make it up to #4 on the Kindle bestsellers list.

Amazon Publishing Acquires 47 Books from Award-Winning Mystery Author Ed McBain

Thomas & Mercer imprint will publish McBain's books starting in Fall 2011

SEATTLE, Jun 22, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- (NASDAQ:AMZN)--Amazon.com today announced that Amazon Publishing has acquired the publication rights of 35 titles in the 87th Precinct Series--including "The Con Man" and "The Mugger"--by author Ed McBain. These books will be published by the Thomas & Mercer imprint in print, digital and audio formats starting in Fall 2011. In addition to the 87th Precinct titles, Thomas & Mercer will publish 12 titles in McBain's Matthew Hope series starting in Spring 2012. These 12 books will be published in digital and audio format, with most of the 12 available in print format. This is the first time any of these books have been available digitally for readers. Jane Gelfman of Gelfman Schneider Literary Agents, Inc. represented the estate of Ed McBain in this deal.

Ed McBain was a pseudonym of Evan Hunter, who passed away in 2005. McBain won the Grand Master Award for lifetime achievement from the Mystery Writers of America in 1986, and he was the first American to receive the Crime Writers Association of Great Britain's Cartier Diamond Dagger award. He is the author of the popular 87th Precinct and Matthew Hope series. With more than 100 million books sold worldwide, McBain was praised by critics and fellow writers. "The wit, the pacing, his relish for the drama of human diversity [are] what you remember about the McBain novels," the Philadelphia Inquirer once said of his writing. People Magazine simply observed that "Ed McBain is, by far, the best at what he does. Case closed."

Me too. Even though it would blow my 2012 goal out of the water. I haven't read these, but they look like books I'd like, and at $0.99 it would be silly not to snap them up now.

Hmm, never heard of this author before. Had to look him up. Nice price point, but this genre is not my style.

Well, they've just racked up another 30 copies sold from me; thanks for the heads up!

Police procedurals aren't really my thing, but I figure that since McBain's apparently had such huge influence on the field (a number of mystery authors I like gave him props on that Amazon feature page), at 99 cents a pop I might as well. Especially since the pre-order pricing on the future releases is $7.99 per.

Also, "literary historiography" sounds so pretentious, but it'll be interesting to see how the style of these develops over the decades and some of the samples had author's notes giving the story behind how/why a few of the books were written, which is something I'm a sucker for anyway.

I had to buy another gift card to pad my account (which I do anyway, since any glitch 1-click-and-returns lose out on the currency conversion if I have it CC-only) and the nice thing about GC purchases is that you can keep track of them by looking at the deductions from your Gift Card balance. Helps me distinguish what I actually paid real money for from all the freebies over at Amazon.

Incidentally, the titles not available in Canada, for those who regularly cross-border shop and might want to try again later after making the appropriate arrangements are:

Con Man; Mugger; King's Ransom; Lullaby; Kiss

Got four of them. I have read him before. Not my favorite, but entertaining enough.
