I'm bored and overwhelmed with work. Everyone seems to be waiting on me for stuff. I think instead I'll go do something utterly nonsensical like build a jet pack or something.

I think building a jet pack is a very reasonable thing to do under the circumstances. I would, if I knew how.

A fellow at work built his own lightweight airplane, but after walking away from his second crash, decided not to press his luck any further and gave it up. Maybe he should have built a jet-pack.

Don't forget to pick up donuts on the way. We can sit back and snack on donuts while you test dive it!

Right now, I am getting ready to go out and about.

I've had a dreadful cough for two months now.

Doctor has given me three separate lots of antibiotics (one of which gave me excruciating chest pains), steroids and inhalers. None of them are working. I am seriously p***ed off by it all

you poor thing! My cold has last night gone into my chest. I have only been sick a few days and I am fed up with it. 2 months! and bluddy steriods! I had that years ago and the steriods made me hungry and cranky!

When I was not sleeping last night I thought to myself that when I get really old, a cold like this will kill me.

Take up scuba diving. We are always at 'neutral buoyancy' when diving. (At least... we are supposed to be a neutral buoyancy...) And when you do a night dive, it's wonderful to turn off your lights and just enjoy the sensation of 'being.' I don't think I'd be comfortable inside a small 'pod.' I need to be able to spread my arms and legs. I don't even like tanning booths for that reason!

I've thought of that, too. I can snorkel pretty good, so using a tank shouldn't be a major problem, I suppose. I don't know about keeping the water out of the mask, though. That seems like it would be somewhat difficult.

LOL! It's not difficult once you learn how. That's an important part of the training. You learn how to take off and put on your mask while underwater, clear the water from it, and continue on. And all you do to 'use the tank' is breath normally. It's 'setting up' the tank that you learn about in the class.

Most resort areas offer scuba certification as a three-day class. Anything longer is just adding in more practice. Basically, if you can breath and you can swim, all you really need to learn is how to deal with the equipment, and the safety procedures that the sport requires. There is absolutely nothing difficult or complicated about recreational (vs technical) diving. Virtually any 12 year old would sail through the class...

A three-day class would give you certification as an "Open Water Diver." There is classroom talks, some reading, and in-water practices leading to a certification dive where you just demonstrate what you learned in class. Bingo. You're a diver. If you want to learn more about the sport you can take the 'Advanced Diver' certification.... and then... and then.. and then....
Certifications for wreck diving, cave diving, underwater naturalist, Nitrox certifications, Rescue Diver certification, Divemaster cert, Master Scuba Diver cert, etc., etc.

It's a great sport for us older guys because basically it's just gently and effortlessly moving through the water. Less work than swimming on the surface! No rushing around (unless you are like me and like to take pictures hither and yon!) no speeding... just cruising with the fishies RIGHT NEXT TO YOU rather than 15 feet below you....

Getting ready to take my bike in for inspection. This is a BIG deal in Japan, takes about a five days and should cost me close to $1,000... The bike has to be taken to the Prefectural Motor Vehicle Department. Depending upon the age of the vehicle, this must be done every one or two years. It costs more as the vehicle ages, which is why there are so few older cars in Japan. After about 10 years, it's cheaper to buy a new one! I prefer the way we did it in Vermont; takes 10 minutes and cost $30 at a local garage.
