Maths question:
Express the square root of 2 as a fraction. Or show why it can't be done. Non-maths question: Where (according to the Bible) did Mary and Joseph go when they left Bethlehem after Jesus had been born? Last edited by pdurrant; 01-06-2012 at 09:48 AM. Reason: clarification |

Suppose sqrt(2) rational? then exist natural numbers (l/m)^2 = 2; with any common divisor between l and m removed. then l^2 = 2xm^2. so l^2 is even. All natural numbers with even squares are even as well. So l = 2xp for some natural number p. meaning l^2 = 4xp^2 = 2xm^2. this means 2xp^2 = m^2; So m^2 is also even, and so m is. But this means l and m still have a common divisor. Second question I would be cheating after seeing the P&R forum this morning. Oh I did not get question 2 so someone else is up no matter what! I believe the author of Matthew says they went to Egypt, but Luke's author posits a different local, as I recall.

Just returned from checking. I was right, although I didn't mention the destination mentioned by Luke. Is that close enough for a win?

Well done Hamlet53 and WT Sharpe. Take it away, one of you. (Although you didn't read Luke quite closely enough. The passage you quote describes them returning to Nazareth from Jerusalem, which is where they went from Bethlehem in Luke's story.) |

When I have time, I'll show how to express the square root of 2 as a fraction.

The following is a continued fraction--
![]() and the square root of 2 written as a continued fraction is-- ![]() A continued fraction can be written in a more readable format where a0, a1, a2, a3... are written as follows [a0; a1, a2, a3, ...] so the square root of 2 written as a continued fraction is [1; 2, 2, 2, …] |

The invention of frequency-hopping spread-spectrum, originally intended as a practically jam-proof directional control mechanism for torpedoes, is fundamental to modern spread-spectrum communication technology such as modern wi-fi networks.
One person came up with the idea, another helped develop it, and together they patented it. Whose idea was it? Last edited by WT Sharpe; 01-06-2012 at 05:15 PM. |

You're in the right ballpark, but that's incorrect.

I believe that Paul was close, but it was Hedy Lamarr if I recall correctly.

Yes, it was the Hollywood film star Hedy Lamarr, whose hobby was inventing. She got the idea from an early radio remote control that used a telephone-type dial to switch between frequencies.
Take it away, Bilbo1967! |
