According to Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose, an irony mark was used in medieval punctuation.

Well, the wikipipedia article on the subject mentions a medieval perconation mark, which may be what Umberto Eco had in mind.

ah, right ; but apparently that one was used to indicate rhetorical questions... i suppose those could be ironic (soemtimes at least) but it seems like a distinct use to me.

Oh, no, you're only a wet blanket out in the real world. Here, yours is another psychological wrinkle in a quilt that adds warmth to the forum.

Ahh, I am forced to quote The Simpsons again. It's a curse.
Grandma: [singing] How many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man? Homer: Seven! Lisa: No, Dad, it's a rhetorical question. Homer: Rhetorical, eh? Eight! Lisa: Dad, do you even know what "rhetorical" means? Homer: [incredulous] Do I know what "rhetorical" means?! Incidentally, if you please, I prefer "Irony Marc". Cheers, Marc Last edited by montsnmags; 05-29-2008 at 08:14 PM. |

Mozzles from the Washington Post Style Invitational
Some of the best of these should be retained as Mozzles:-
Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of obtaining sex. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high. Tatyr: A lecherous Mr. Potato Head. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the recipient who doesn't get it. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. Burglesque: A poorly planned break-in. (See: Watergate) Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like a serious bummer. Glibido: All talk and no action. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a refund from the IRS, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole. http://dickmacalive.blogspot.com/200...itational.html |

and one which i plan to adopt, from the original list : my neighbors will think i've gone completely round the bend when they hear me shouting "vade retro**, Beelzebug* !!"
*(n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. **which reminds me of a hilarious story a friend of mine once told me : apparently, as a child, she hadn't quite grasped the expression "vade retro" which we use in casual conversation to express extreme repugnance, and shouted out one day "va dans le métro !!" (get in the subway). hehehe !! that story still makes me laugh. "va dans le métro, satanus !!" Last edited by zelda_pinwheel; 05-30-2008 at 09:17 AM. |

And then, of course, there's the Bryant of books.
This was originally the Old English Bryant and defined as the number of books in my ancestor's library (= 4577 books), divided into the Habryant (= 2289 books), the Sitter [or Rhoom] (= 1104 books), the Dinky (= 161 books), the Wallshel (= 23 books), and the Bedside (= 17 books).
But metrication makes fools of us all. The SI unit is the Metric Bryant (=1000 books). James Bryant http://www.dendarii.com/bujold_lst.html#bryant |
