Definitely one of the best sci-fi short stories ever written. It's been years since I've read it.

A couple of my favorites are also some of the first sci-fi I ever read, in a slim anthology I got through the RIF program in school:

Betelguese Bridge by William Tenn
A Bowl of Biskies Makes a Growing Boy by Raymond F. Jones

Another of which I'm probably overly fond is Harlan Ellison's "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman.

Also, you could class it as sci-fi, fantasy, or general/literary, but I'll give honorable mention to Michael Bishop's The Mark 16 Hands On Assembly of Jesus Risen, Formerly Snake-o-rama.

I really like The Inverted World by Christopher Priest (author of The Prestige). I suppose favourite books have a lot to do with where and when you read them, and maybe it's partly that, but the premise of this novel entirely spun me out, and I had no idea what was happening.

Ray Bradbury - The Veldt, And There Will Come Soft Rains

There's another R. Bradbury story I love, but can't rem the title. Ugh. Need more caffeine.

Hugs,

I cannot seem to find Vernor Vinge's "Longshot"

Anyone able to provide a link as Amazon don't seem to have it ?

Its been a while since I read many Novellas... I actually am hopeful that the form will become much relevant in an ebook world.

Some favorites include "The Mountains of Mourning" by Lois McMaster Bujold and "The Persistance of Vision" by John Varley.

The tipping point for me to get an ereader was the availability of Analog SF/SF magazine w/o DRM. I love the novella size story and Analog usually has some really good ones.

It will be interesting to see if the increasing popularity of ereaders will lead to an increase in novellas and novelletes, however. It would definitely be a positive change!

Hope so! As well as short stories themselves -- my favorite length.
