Reporting similar problem - definitely not physical damage
Hello, everyone (I'm new),
We have a PRS-600 (since December) and bought a Sony brand wall charger for it today, since it's too much trouble to keep the computer from hibernating when we try to charge it with USB. This evening, my daughter plugged the unit in to charge it from the wall. The instant it was plugged in, horizontal and vertical lines appeared across the "front" of the screen and the yellow light began flashing on the charge indicator. Now when you turn it on, you can't read the screen because the lines obscure the middle of the screen. No trauma. The lines are there whether the unit is on or off. We've tried resetting. I'm going to try to hard reset it tomorrow (it's late here). I think the units have an electrical problem. Daughter has complained before that the unit just shuts off sometimes. And perhaps an errant charge could damage the screen's substrate? There was no trauma - it was lying on the countertop when plugged in. My husband's getting on the phone with Sony tomorrow to discuss this. This will be our last Sony product if they don't offer a full replacement. Yes, I think Sony's going downhill. My c. 1990 cassette tape Walkman still works fine! |

Exact same problem.
I experience the exact same problem with my reader yesterday. I was reading a book, my girlfriend called me and I left it on top of our table. After 20 mins I got back to the reader which happened to be frozen in the same page. I tried the power slide on top with no results, then I connected it to my computer. At that very moment I got an area that looks very much like what physical damage causes on a LCD display (i imagine it would be similar on these e-ink devices). I am positively sure there was NO way the reader could have been damaged while lying on that table. I guess it is a manufacturing defect.
This is certainly the very last Sony device I ever get. |

You do realize that Sony doesn't make the screen?
And E-Ink is the screen used by virtually all the readers? So the same thing can happen on any of them? |

My screen just broke exacty like that, simply by turning on the device. What a poor product! I will never buy anything made by Sony again for sure and discourage everyone I know of doing so.
My warranty is out since 4 months and the repair would cost 90$... this is ridiculous. A fragile ereader is useless, I'm going back to real books now. |
