Nevermind. I read the first four chapters and couldn't get into the story so I returned it.

I'm listening to Stories I only Tell My Friends (Autobiography) by Robb Lowe that I picked up free, when it was posted in our Deals forum.

Quote:
Narrated by the author himself, this audiobook is a wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye. A teen idol at 15 and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles experiences from his Ohio childhood, to the wild excesses of 1980s Hollywood, to the surreal nexus of show business and politics, both on the set of The West Wing and in the actual White House. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.
I am listening as I clean house and was so caught up in some of his stories that I kept finding something else to clean or organize, just to keep listening.

I'm reading "The Sisters Brothers" by Patrick deWitt. Comic and picaresque and full of quirky characters.

I just finished the second Montrumologist title by Yancey. It's a wonderful horror novel, just like the first one.

I'll be reading the 3rd one shortly, but right now I just started....

"The Serialist," which garnered wonderful reviews.

Started Miss Pym Disposes by Josephine Tey. Somehow, I'd never read this one of hers, and I'm already chuckling. I have pretty much all of her books on my TBR, but most are ones I had read back in the 80's. This one and The Singing Sands are new to me, though, so they'll go to the front of that list.

I'm trading in Altered Carbon for The Windup Bird Chronicle on audio for now. I didn't realize, but I've apparently listened to at least the first chapter before. I don't know what's coming, so I don't think I finished it, but I know I listened through at least that first scene in the girl's yard.

Perhaps you encountered the short story? (which is an earlier incarnation of the novel). The novel is a re-visioning of the ss.

Just finished The Speed of Dark by Elizabeth Moon. Like "Movement: A Short Story about Autism in the Future" by MobileRead's own Nancy Fulda, it's told in the first person from the point of view of the autistic, and like that story, it takes place in the near future where a new procedure promises to reverse the effects of autism. But here the similarities end. Fulda's Hannah was a very different and far more socially impaired person than Moon's Lou Arrendale, and unlike Lou, Hannah was not being threatened with loss of employment if she refused the treatment (indeed, she was too impaired for employment). The protagonists in the stories also eventually chose very different options with very different outcomes. I highly recommend both. It took a while in my opinion for The Speed of Dark to get going, but once drawn in, it was spellbinding. Will you like the ending? Hard to say. Some critics have called it a cop-out. I did find Nancy Fulda's resolution to her short story more satisfying.

And now, because the last few books I've been reading have been a bit on the heavy side, I thought I'd give myself a little break before tackling this month's MobileRead Book Club selection, Black Rain by Ibuse Masuji, so I cracked open another one of Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason mysteries: The Case of the Curious Bride. After all; there's nothing quite like a good murder to cheer the spirits and revive the soul. BTW, my Kindle home screen incorrectly renders his name as "Earl" Stanley Gardner. Let's hear it for the wonders of spell-checkers!

The Speed of Dark did take a while to get into, but was then very compelling. I find I like most stuff Ms. Moon writes, and so I read this when I wouldn't normally have done so. But could not put it down.

Fascinating! Did you happen to read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time? This is also from the point of view of the autistic.

I'm going to put both your suggestions on my TBR pile because I loved Mark Haddon's work and would like to see how others approach similar characters.

Also - a bit different now, but have you ever read Skallagrigg? This is one of my favourite novels and features characters with cerebral palsy. This is one of the few books I would give 5/5 stars (actually I'd give it 5.5/5 )

I started this book on several different occasions before it finally "took." But like others have mentioned... once it grabs you, it doesn't let go.

I haven't read either of those, but after seeing you gave the latter a 5.5/5 star review, I'll have to chek it out.

That's a very apt way to put it, DiapDealer. The Speed of Dark certainly doesn't grab you right out of the gate, but once it does, it's got you.

William Horwood has written some amazing books. Skallagrigg is on my favourite list, and so is The Stonor Eagles, both very different - from each other and from most else that I've ever read. Well thought out and put together and sometimes almost overwhelming in their emotional impact - simply brilliant.

I just loved "The Stonor Eagles", it was the first book I ever chose when I joined a book club. One of the few books I have read several times.
