I've been doing OK at resisting both of those bundles - neither is a favourite author. But the new Wen Spencer eArc is calling to me. But I just added 3 books to my TBR (Library downloads, so I don't count them against my buying resistance.)

Perhaps the freebie Charles Sheffield story collection this month can help strengthen your mousely resistance?

But then, the publisher is offering 37% off everything else in their backlist sf/fantasy reprint line...

Draconic, actually. Or maybe Alexandrian.

Either way, the nice thing about that is that acquisitive instincts are perfectly normal for us, and therefore I need engage in no pretense about the fact that I flat-out grab and hoard appealing shiny stuff.

Two days ago I bought 10 start-of-series mysteries from Poisoned Pen Press for 99 cents each, DRM-free, as part of their introductory promotional special. I have read only one of the authors prior to this, and while her later-in-series title was quite decent, she was not on my wishlist and by no stretch of the imagination can be called a favourite author, though I am willing to give her a chance to earn that accolade.

I feel no shame and I hope they offer more.

You fiend! I shall resist. I have 380 nice ebooks I've bought to read. I do not need to make it 390!

But I did get the Charles Sheffield freebie. I don't count freebies.

If this sale does well (and from the thread comments from people who likewise splurged, it is doing well), then the publisher will offer more such in the future after you have reduced your TBR to accommodate the potential influx.

Maybe not the same books, but perhaps the promotional shuffle will result in ones you personally find more interesting. So, win-win!

I'm starting to think that freebie offerings from authors you would have bought anyway might perhaps qualify as a deduction.

After all, you are saved from spending money you would have spent of your own volition and thus, things balance out.

I have taken on a resolution this year!

I'll stay away from ebook-selling websites...

I think I'll visit hardware-selling websites instead

Those sites are even more dangerous and expensive. One time, I purchased some really nice drawer/cabinet pulls and somehow ended up with a new bathroom vanity, sink, and faucet.

Day 2 of my "don't purchase any books for 6 months" challenge and I haven't purchased any yet.

**I think I have downloaded about 25 freebies, though.**

But there isn't a "hardware buying addicts support thread" (yet)....

Besides, those ebook purchases can be way more dangerous... "Oh, it's only €2, I can buy it" and do that a 100 times and you'll have a very nice gadget instead!

I lapsed over Christmas. The Fictionwise coupon and the 50% rebate over at Allromance were too tempting. But I used the Buy 10 get one free coupon to get Mercedes Lackey's latest for free. And I used the e-book bucks I recieved from Allromance to buy e-books I had wanted to read. So I saved money. . Now I just need to resist the Wen Spencer Arc on Baen ebooks....

Arrgghh. First I was taken in by one of these that was set in British Columbia. Ah, well, it's only $.99. But then I noticed that it's the same purchase engine as Dana Stabenow uses, and I hadn't been to her site in a while. And she has a book in her Kate Shugak series on sale for $2.99. So now my $.99 book is up to $3.98, since I couldn't pass up a $5 savings on a book I would eventually have bought anyway...

Think of it this way: the $5 you saved on that Dana Stabenow series purchase you would have made anyway has subsidised the 99 cent book you picked up, so essentially, free book!

And now you also have an extra $4.01 in savings that you can apply to another book or four. Or just to booze to make you forget* you bought all those books in the first place.

Incidentally, it looks like Stabenow no longer sells her e-books directly off her site? (At least, the non-outside-store links have been removed.) That must make it harder for her readers outside the US who need a plain or at least ADE-compatible ePub version instead of fiddling with the "NookBook" or the iDevice variant.

* Mind you, one would have to be a very cheap drunk to be able to accomplish this for $4.01, so perhaps you'd be better off just going straight to buying the extra books.

Well, as you know from the What's In Your Cup thread, I'm not a cheap drunk, but tend towards old single malts. So I guess I'll just have to buy more cheap books instead. :P

And yes, I see the same thing on the Stabenow site, now. Not sure what that's about.
