I still occasionally buy paper books. Our library has occasional discard sales, and often get books for 10c-25c. I used to buy them, read them and then Bookcross them.

I save money by often being behind the times when it comes to books. By the time something is old news for everyone else, I get it at someone's discard sale and it gets to be new to me. I doubt e-books will follow that pricing scheme, enticing folks to read oldies but goodies for a quarter .I am so behind on reading all the books I own (both dtb and e) that I am in no hurry for the prices to drop. Plus I read newer e-books via the library. Library loans are the only precursor to a desire to own a book enough to want to buy it. I do know I have no interest in deadtree news papers ever. Calibre's news recipes will keep me current for beyond my life expectancy. |

I'm in the NO column. Who knows....MAYBE I'll see a book at a garage sale....or maybe, there'll be a book I want that doesn't have an eversion. And sure, if I'm buying for someone else who likes paper books.

But this past year I read 32 books....and only 1 was paper. It was a book my daughter read and liked and gave to me to read. For me, I simply prefer ebooks, just as I used to prefer paper backs. And with ebooks, I don't have to wait for a year for them to come out. Lee |

I am living away from 'home' and really want to limit the stuff I carry around with me - plus apartments in Hong Kong are far too small to waste space on storing books. I also don't think there is much I am missing out on in terms of books I would read, and my Kindle comes with me on business trips, journeys to work and the occassional long flight home to the UK. For the smell and touch sensation, I merely leaf through some of the contract documents at work.....actually I might even look into putting that on my Kindle via Calibre - does it do Excel? |

We just got a new hot water heater that will allow me to take long, soaking baths. I'm not about to take my kindle in the tub with me, so I'm going to need to start buying at least some paper books so I can read in the tub.

Other than that, maybe some books for university and then something which isn't in ebook form mainly local translated non-fiction. And then if I come across some nice translated sci-fi like I found Futurological congress... |

A lot of books I want to read aren't available as e-books, so yeah, of course I will. And I also like to read books in the bathtub, and I'm afraid I just don't trust the electronics in a freezer bag method.

I don't really get why it is an either/or. I like regular books and I like ebooks. I love the ease of getting e-books and the price, but I also get the vast majority of my reading material from the library for free, and it's stuff that is either not available as an ebook, or at least not at our library. |

This thread came at a unusual moment for me. About 2 weeks ago I would have said that no, I had no plans to ever buy print books again (exception: books needed for official or study purposes). But last week I decided to order a used paperback from Amazon... a title long out of print and impossible to find in ebook format anywhere. This book will be cut up and scanned.

I've decided that ebooks have a longer shelf life than my paper books. Permanency virtually guaranteed. Vic Last edited by VicLavigne; 01-03-2012 at 02:29 PM. |

I assume most of the 4000 is just public domain or free books. What if a series of books come out that you hear good stuff about?? You are not going to buy the ebook as well?? Last edited by Tony1988; 01-03-2012 at 03:33 PM. |

I wouldn't willingly buy another paper book, but I suppose I might grudgingly if I came across something I really, really wanted to read and couldn't find it in digital form.

And, not to seem weird or anything, but I also don't miss trips to the bookstore or library. Oof...I might be in danger of becoming a hermit. (Hermette?) |

I've found that ebooks have allowed me to discover books that I want to own in hardcopy, like Wells' The Sleeper Awakes. Though, I haven't actually gotten around to buying that one...

I don't understand why would you own the same book in paper copy when you have it in electronic copy? What benefit is it going to provide you?
