Orlok beats me, and his link is much easier to understand than Wikipedia's article. But it only has the "animal" part. The "element" part (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) helps define a person, also

(and notice that the Chinese new year always starts later than normal New Year...)

You're not kidding about it being confusing! The example they give a calculation for (1967 = 44) ends up with the result "Fire Sheep". Not only can't I see how they looked that up in the table, there is no Sheep in the list! (I'm guessing it's the Goat, but that's in row 8, not 4 - my head hurts).

My result was 33, but I can't work out how to look it up

33? You're a Fire Monkey. Very easy, they hide the Sexagenary cycle table, just click "show" - works everytime

(and yes, sheep, goat or ram, the same.)

This one has the other parts. I am a Ying Metal Pig and my husband is Yang Fire Dragon. The baby is going to be a Yang Water Dragon. hmmm I wonder what having a fire dragon and a water dragon in the same house is going to end up being like?

A swimmer? I can deal with that. I was planning on Mommy and Baby swim class already.

I found this explanation for the Metal part.

According to local rumors, superstitions and normal thinking, well, the water will have bad effects on the fire. But that's a different story - the wikipedia's article on Wu Xing might help.
(But the element of the year in which you were born and your own element aren't the same, mind you. Take me as an example: I was born in metal goat year, but I'm classified as earth in Wu Xing system. Unnecessarily complicated.)

Well, I expect the HUbby to be sleep deprived and a bit annoyed that his tennis playing is going to decrease. I'll hope that those are all the bad effects that we suffer.

It sounds like Chinese astrology is as complex as western astrology, what with the houses based on the position of planets at a the exact hour of your birth. I have always screwed people up with that stuff since I was born in a car and we don't have the exact hour of my birth. It is a guestimation.

Starting off the new year with how I mean to go on. A large mug of Peet's Major Dickason's, and then a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice.

The OJ is from Moro blood oranges. Practically raspberry in colour, and a definite density of flavour. Brings back wonderful memories of my first experience of blood oranges -- it was in 1968 in Florence. Was on holiday(spring break) there (Europe on $5 a Day) and they had them in the market just down the street from the Pensione I was staying in.
