I finished Tim Powers' Three Days to Never... and of course it didn't let me down. It won't knock any of my Powers favorites from their perches, but still very, very enjoyable. Very few writers could have me thinking that a crack squad of paranormal operatives monitoring psychic channels in the US was perfectly normal and acceptable behavior... in two chapters or less.

I used part of a Christmas gift-certificate to purchase my first ever K.J. Parker novel—The Hammer—so I currently have that going. A few things to note about The Hammer so far for me:

1) it's a stand-alone, it has a tight focus (setting-wise and the number of main characters), and it's very character-driven. All of those can be tallied in my personal plus column for fantasy.

2) there's no doubt in my mind whatsoever that K.J. Parker is a woman.

3) I couldn't care any less about that ^^^ (except in a "huh... wonder why the big deal/mystery surrounding that fact?" kind of way).

And another book goes on my wish list. Thanks for the heads up.

So, DiapDealer -- if I were to want to try a Tim Power's book, never having read any of his stuff, where would you suggest I start? Just curious, since I know our tastes sometimes overlap.

Probably On Stranger Tides or The Anubis Gates, but I don't think you can go wrong just throwing a dart either. His new book coming out in March of 2012 is a very loose sequel to his earlier The Stress of Her Regard (my personal Powers favorite, but often a little too gothic for many people's tastes), but other than that—and the Fault Lines series (three complete novels comprising a very loose trilogy)—they're all stand-alone novels. The Drawing of the Dark might also be a fun starting point.

I've not read them all myself. Since I've noticed his output slowing down (six years since his last book), I'm in no hurry to catch up with him. So I try to ration.

I just read independent author Deborah Emin's Scags at 18 (there is a Scags at 7 which I've read but it's not necessary to read that to enjoy Scags at 18). It's a nice quick read about Scags, as she starts college in Vermont in 1969. Written in first person diary format. Not my usual genre but I loved it.

http://www.prweb.com/releases/Scagsa...web8983105.htm

It's available in drm-free epub or PDF. I bought the epub and converted to mobi for my kindle -- formatting is good. $9.95. Must confess that I know the author (but wouldn't say I like it if I didn't).

I wrapped up both Norwegian Wood and the Ringworld audiobook last night, and started in on Altered Carbon audio last night and 11/22/63 today. Both books I just finished were great, though I think I still prefer Dance, Dance, Dance from Murakami. The latter of the new reads already has me hooked a dozen pages into it, but I'm not sure about Altered Carbon. The opening just seemed like such a cheeseball action movie setup, worthy of that awful G.I. Joe movie last year. I'll give it a couple chapters to redeem itself, but it may land on the discard pile.

Containment Room 7 by Bryan Hall

"In a far corner of space, orbiting a massive black hole, the research ship DARC12 discovers a strange asteroid—one that seems to be … alive. After loading the rock onboard for study, the ship quickly descends into madness.

It begins with voices, whispers filling the shadows and the minds of the crew. A once sane man declares that their discovery is not just a rock, but a god. Then the killing begins, and a cult rises swearing allegiance to their newfound deity.

As the murders mount and the dead themselves begin to rise, a small group of survivors cling to the hope that they can somehow escape the hell they’ve been plunged into. But their problems mount as they face an army of undead crewmembers, the reanimated corpses of hundreds of failed genetic experiments, the murderous cult, and—worst of all—the rapidly evolving creature in containment room 7."

It's just that for some odd reason the two editions aren't tied together in Amazon's database.

Ha! I hadn't noticed that. I have almost all of Powers' works in physical form (except for one Topaz ebook), so I've never really looked them up. That $9.99 price seems a little steep though... and I'm a huge fan! Sounds like the publisher is trying to cash in on the fact the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie very loosely borrows from Powers' 1987 book of the same name.

Strange. A search for it in the Kindle Store only, popped it right up. At $9.99, which seems a bit steep.

Meanwhile, finished Dragonseye, the second book in the On Dragonwings omnibus. I think I'll just go ahead and finish Moretta and get these off my TBR before the new year and new challenge start.

Cool Joe Leaphorn & Jim Chee Mystery Novels

I finished The Fallen Man last night and got that feeling at the end that I really didn't want to leave the Hillermanverse. So I picked up The First Eagle (the Hillerman books are $8.99 at amazon.com), the 13th installment in the Joe Leaphorn & Jim Chee Mystery Novels. I really enjoy this series. It places me in an environment where I've spent a lot of vacation time and also some college field work time as well.

I just watched the Jim Butcher interview (Thank You Alan! ) and wishlisted one book from each of his favorite authors, except for David Weber, as I have all of the Honorverse books already. I know I won't get to any of those authors in 2012, but they'll at least be there for reference should I want to give one a try.
