Question Suggestion? How do you handle books already read?

I've been trying to figure out the best way to handle books I have completed. I guess Tags would be one way. What do other people do?

I notice that updating the tag, for instance, putting a "READ" tag on a book only updates the tag on the PC library. It looks like I have to delete the book on the device and then reload the book with the new tag. Is this what I have to do? Seems a lot of work.

I suppose I could just delete the book from the reader device, but then I wouldn't have it for future reference.

I recently uploaded the PRS+ firmware, but I can't tell if that is any answer to my quest. Is the new "folder view" some way to categorize.

I would appreciate someone pointing the way or pointing to a thread that will explain. I've tried some forum searches here, but never get to any details.

I keep all of my ebooks on my iMac in Calibre. When I finish a book on a device, I delete it from the device, and mark it as read in Calibre.

PRS+ has a nifty feature called "Set New Flag Manually." You'll find it under PRS+ Settings > Book Management. Once it's enabled, when you have a book open and press the Options button, you'll be able to toggle the "New" badge on and off at will.

In other words, without PRS+, any newly loaded book has a "New" badge on it, but as soon as you open the book, even if only for one second, the "New" badge disappears forever. With PRS+, the "New" badge remains until you manually remove it using the Options menu. (And if you change your mind, you can always toggle it back on.)

Once you've set the "New" badge on or off on all your books, it's easy to see which books you've read. Also, all the unread books will automatically appear in the default "Unread Books" Collection.

I move books that I have read into a collection called "Read". I have also divided them into multiple genres "Read - Classics", "Read - Modern Fiction", "Read - Non Fiction", etc.

All I do is remove it from the reader.

I don't seem to have problem remembering what I have read or not so my collection on the PC stays the same apart from when new books are added.

I also have an "unread" tag in calibre, but I'm debating whether I should make more heavy use of the "new" feature in PRS+. That would work mesh better with the way the reader's software is designed.

PRS+ is a different type of firmware, correct? Does it also change the order in which the books appear on the home page? I'd much prefer to have the last 3 read books appear (as I usually have several books on the go), rather than the most recently uploaded ones. I did see a post about doing this, but it sounded v. complicated!

I've been relying on the new tags on the reader since it's been working so well now with recent PRS+ changes. I sometimes like to reread books so preferred a method to let them stay on the reader.

Edit: Snuck in another post while I typed.

Yes, PRS+ is a different firmware, and has many other great features in addition to managing the new tags easily. It lets you change fonts (that being the main advantage of PRS+ to most readers, me included), has a folder sort option if you prefer, adds a few games (although they drain the battery much quicker and not a main feature to me). It's a very easy installation process now, just download the file for your reader, unzip it, hook up your reader to the computer and double click the setup.exe file and wait a few minutes.

If all you want to do is change the order of which 3 books are displayed on the main screen, use the Order Books tool. It's a tiny program that installs on your computer and lets you change the 3 books that show on the main page by changing the date. Works very fast and is very handy, I always keep my next 3 books to be read there, last 3 loaded was totally useless to me. It also will change the new tags in bulk if you wish as well now. Very handy tool.

Yes, the last PRS+ versions allow you to show at the home screen the three last read books, without any additional tool.

I for my part have a separated library in Calibre for finished books. After finishing a book I move it via 'copy to library XY (delete after copy)'.
On my reader I occasionally put it into a 'gelesen' (read) collection.

Collections on my reader are used very seldom. Reason is, that cause of my special way to change system fonts (with help of PRS+) from time to time all my collections are beeing deleted. So collections and underlines in book are somehow 'unstable' and short-dated.

Getting PRS+ on my 950 is now my new mission in life. I hate that I can't toggle that flag at will in the original firmware. Hate it.

Must get PRS+...!

I don't 'library' read books. I simply delete them. I already have access to more books than I have lifetime left.
