I would only consider buying paper books if:

1. It's not available in ebook - eg, lots of old 40-60's SF. Even then, I would probably wait. I've got enough on my TBR list...
2. It's not fiction and I need it for quick reference - eg, spiritual books (bible, etc) and tech/programming guides. These books are dip-in and my experience is ebook reader's are not dip-in systems.

Any new books will probably be ebook format. Just ordered 3 more last night. Dang - it's almost too easy. That's 5 books since Christmas day

I'm a re-reader. Any book or series I like well enough to re-read, I'll buy in paper if possible. Why? I don't know. Just one of those funny quirks, I guess.

Is that really true in the US? In the UK, eBooks are normally significantly cheaper than their paper equivalents, normally about two thirds the price.

I have something like 800 files on my ebook reader so far, but all free. I haven't bought any ebooks yet. I don't trust them. They're an intangible commodity, and the ones that cost money are usually locked down with DRM. I'd rather get something for my money, so I'm sticking to used paperbacks for now.
I also buy CDs instead of downloading music, and only very rarely do I pay for software.

Maybe not so much fun for the children if they have to go through all those books. This is something that our family is having to deal with now after the death of a beloved aunt. It's a lot of work to go through room after room of someone's extended library. In our case, most of the books will end up being auctioned off in lots. I kept a box of books that I wanted to read and couldn't find as ebooks, but there were many more that looked interesting.

This has given me the incentive to inventory and weed out my own library as I'd hate to have my kids go through this. Most of my pbooks are stored in the basement and it's been back-breaking work. It is satisfying, though, to watch the "donate" stack grow.

Ace (Penguin imprint)

Bunnicula - Deborah Howe:
$5.99 ebook, $5.99 paperback (odd size; children's book)

Harper Voyager (Harper Collins imprint) Loss leader, because...

In the US store, most of the Agency 6 set Kindle books to the same price as the MMPB's except when they're obviously doing a promotional sale. When the only pbook is trade for $15-20, they set the ebook price around $12--even when the tpb is a manyth-edition reprint. (Spiral Dance is $17 in trade, for the 20th anniversary edition, and $12 for the ebook. Amazon discounts the paper to $11.56.)

ebooks may be convenient and space saving but it doesn't bode well for printers of paper novels......jobs lost?

There were jobs lost when the world moved on from tablets to scrolls, and scrolls to books too... Atleast we know that books won't go away completely, unlike it's predecessors. We don't know if they'll even suffer a significant loss. Literacy levels and sheer population on Earth are only increasing, which might even increase the demand for the printed book.

At this point, the only time I buy a paper novel is when there is no ebook edition. For example, I really like The Maeve Chronicles by Elizabeth Cunningham, but there are no ebook editions of those books.

Oh please, you are making the assumption that your kids are interested in you old dusty books. I just bet, they will haul them all out to the dump truck at the first opportunity.

IMO, the one person on this forum who is most qualified to make an informed assumption about CJJ's kids is CJJ himself. Why make a bet you'd lose in all probability?

Of course I'm going to buy a paper novel again at some point. Something I want will inevitably be unavailable in ebook form. At which time I'll frown for all of about 3 seconds and then buy the print version and gobble it up. Because first and foremost... I just love reading.

I bought two paper books in 2011. I have not read them yet. One of them I have as ebook but in English so I bought paper one in my native language. Gathering dust on the shelf. I bought/downloaded over 50 ebooks this year and except 6 read them all. I was hesitating over hardback copy of "Agony and extasy" by Irving Stone but put it back even though I loved it when I read it first time (brick size, font size fixed etc) Will buy ebook when it comes out. Hopefully. So, mayhaps I will buy a paper book but will I ever read it?
