B&N EPuB Protection
I may be asking something that I am certain others have already (positively or negatively) resolved, but is there any way I can copy books downloaded from Barnes and Noble onto this device?
I have a Nook Color, and received this device as a gift and would like to try 1 or 2 books that I have already purchased on an e-ink screen rather than the Nook Colors screen. I have read one or two articles to remove DRM, but frankly, I would rather find the easier route to manage the device/books than doing anything in a legal landmine DMCA area. |

As I understand it the B&N DRM can only be handles by different Nooks (and I suppose Nook apps?).
The few B&N books I have I have read on a Nook, so I haven't really tried anything else. |

There is no alternative to consulting Apprentice Alf for an un-rooted T1.
The Nook DRM compatibility is one-way: the Nook will open ADEPT DRM epubs just like the Sony readers but the Sony readers cannot open B&N DRM'ed epubs. The why is subject to interpretation but that's where we stand. Now, if you root the T1 (very easy) then you can install the Nook for Android reading app and then you can open the B&N epubs. Pick yer poison: hack or strip the DRM. Last edited by fjtorres; 12-27-2011 at 07:27 PM. |

Good thing you bought the books so that you could enjoy a lesser user experience than those who decided to acquire them by other means.

![]() Me, I only bought the Sony to hack it. I wouldn't have bothered with it otherwise. As a typical Sony product, the hardware is fine but the sofftware is at best adequate. Once hacked, though, Coolreader, Audible, and Kindle make it a very useful toy. Plus Pandora and LastFM. Of course, with Coolreader as my epub reader of choice, the only epubs I buy are DRM-free. |

My suggestion is to go look up (Google is your friend) Apprentice Alf. Then you can strip the DRM and do what you like with the ePub. Once the DRM is removed from a B&N ePub, it's just a standard ePub eBook.

I've bought several epubs from B&N to load onto my Sony readers. And a big Yes! that Apprentice Alf will help you out.
As a side note, I've also bought Kindle version ebooks from Amazon to do the same thing. Apprentice Alf Plus Calibre helps with this combo. Although given the choice, I'd buy from B&N first, since converting from Amazon's format to epub can make some alterations in the ebook structure. Vic |

Thank you guys very very much for your replies. I think I need to check out Apprentice Alf a bit more closely to see what I need to do.
Though frankly, based on fjtorres comments, I may consider rooting the device, since there may be some interesting options that become available. Once again thank you for your guys/gals help. |

Any ebook with DRM is basically a lease, not owned. There is no guarantee that you will be able to move it to another device. Even if it is stored in B&N's cloud, if you lose your login you lose your right to view it. Changing your credit card on file with B&N can even cause problems. But.... it's your choice to live with this or not. Vic |

More important: Alf's assistance is great *insurance*.
Even if you have no pressing need to use the tools (I haven't) the knowledge and tools are worth keeping handy for future-proofing. |

If you intend to keep for future use, Ebooks should always be De-DRM'ed while you still can. Even with the tools, you still need the original DRM server (for Adobe) or know the CC # used to buy the book (for B&N), to do so.
*Forward Looking Statements that may not come to pass exactly* I would be especially wary of any Adobe DRM. In the very near future, (I estimate 2 years) the New York 6 are either going to realize that they have to give up DRM to allow the free market to save them from Amazon controlling and supplying the channel (as the music publishers did), or they will die a horribly quick bankruptcy. Either way, Adobe is going to find itself bereft of any paying customers for E-book DRM that doesn't even work for it's advertised purpose. At that point, like nearly every other DRM provider before it (including Google and Microsoft,) the authentication servers will be shut down, regardless of implied 'indefinate' book acces, and anyone who has previously purchased DRM restricted books with no migration path will be left scred. |
