The difference between comics and the written word is the manner in which the brain processes an image and a word. That said,I suspect that comics are more likely to be serialized, however as ereaders and tablets saturate the populace, there is a greater chance of interesting enough people in a serial story to make it economically viable, especially if the story is accompanied by ads. BTW, can anyone give me one word that categorizes both ereaders and tablets?

As it turns out, I just started reading Great Expectations, which was serialized over nine months or so, two chapters a week. It's interesting to see how the arc of the story works. So far no dull moments, starting from page one, where an escaped convict threatens to cut out poor Pip's heart and liver if he doesn't come across with food and a file to cut a manacle. I'm only 15 percent into it, but there is no shortage of surreal plot twists. Not to mention regularly scheduled cliff-hangers to keep you turning the pages. It's like a primer on how to write a serialized novel.

That's why Dickens was such a superstar in his own day! I really do think it's a good idea!

What? A sentence at a time? I think that might be pushing it...

Although...

If an author had 2 or more twitter accounts, and their story was laid out as a twitter exchange between the accounts... that might be an interesting storytelling format.

I think the comparison to comics is apt. A lot of comic fans (like me) no longer buy the monthlies. We wait for the trade paperback graphic novel collection instead. We want the whole story in one package, instead of fragments of stories in multiple packages. So it is possible that we're moving away from serial content, culturally speaking.

I'm like that, too... which makes it doubly frustrating that digital comics services like Comixology will only serve comics collections one issue at a time, often at their full digital price (no discounted amount for a full collection), which can make a digital collection more than buying the print collection. Not cool, and not very attractive for collectors like me.
