The ePub is just a ZIP file. Rename the extension from .epub to .zip and then you can extract the CSS file. Then if it can be fixed, you can put it back in the ZIP file where it was.

That ePub has DRM. Plus you should not be posting the full book. Just the DRM free original CSS file from the ePub.

Sorry, I don't know how to do that. With all the mistakes I've made in a rush to set the device up for my wife to read her book, I have files in different folders, I'm not sure which is which now! There's been so much different software to set up, and processes I don't fully understand that I've had to go through, just to get a couple of ebooks on a new ereader, my head is spinning . At this stage, the ebook shows up in Calibre, ADE and the Sony Reader, and she's reading it happily on the Sony. If I purchase any more Kobo epubs I guess it will be worthwhile to learn how to alter the CSS, but at this stage I haven't seen a CSS file.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me, but I've come to the whole ebook process in total ignorance.
Can I somehow delete that attachment?

Hi,
I have been following this as I have had the same problem with some ebooks from Kobo (never used to have this issue). I contacted Kobo customer support and was told that since they can open the books and don't see any problems there is nothing they can do. I have come to the conclusion that I will not be able to use Kobo as a source for ebooks.
I buy books to read them , not to add tech challenges to my life.
Better luck to you with resolving your problems.

I guess it's nice to see I'm not the only one with this problem... and it's not just books from Kobo. Like others in this thread, I don't bother messing with the formatting, I simply won't read the book. The few ebooks I've paid for, have not had any formatting problems, so I just delete the free ones that do, and move on.

UGH! I just had this issue with two ebooks that I purchased yesterday from Kobo. It appears to be more than just a random book here or there, and now it's being picked up in blogs. It appears that if the book has been released in the store sometime in November or December then the book is at risk of not being readable on a non-Kobo ereader. I am not sure if it is Kobo who is adding their custom CSS and Javascript to the book after they receive it from the publisher or if it is something in the software that the publishers might use to prepare books for Kobo's store. Maybe it is just a mistake somehow, but Kobo has not acknowledged it as a problem presently. Until they fix this issue, then I think that I will not use them as a source for ebooks. Very disappointing!

jswolf, if you want to look at an example, then check out Vince Flynn's Transfer of Power. It is currently a free book promotion. It has been Koboized. [Book #1 in the Mitch Rapp series. I've read it. Highly recommended for anyone who likes thrillers.]

There is more discussion in this thread in the Kobo forum (and pictures too) by other people having similar problems.

I've just downloaded Transfer of Power (I've read it and it is very good) and I see the problem. I'll be having a look at it and I'll report back. I want to know what it is that was done to it.

I've solved the problem. It was actually quite easy.

1. Stripped the DRM
2. Delete the page template file
3. Using notepad++ I loaded in all the XML files
4. Searched/replaced out all of the references to the javascript and the page template
5. In the OPF remove the reference to the page template
6. Fix the CSS references to reference the original CSS instead of the Kobo CSS and do this via search/replace
7. Delete the directories that contain the Javascript and the Kobo CSS

Done and fixed.

There's another problem with koboized epubs that will probably need a regular expression to fix. As part of the mangling done to the contents of the book itself, white space following italicized text is removed.

The free eBook linked above (in an earlier message) does not have a problem with spaces before or after italics. But it does have a problem with the map as it's not set to fit the screen so it's too large.

I have also seen the issue with missing white space after italicized text.

I've seen that as an issue on some eBooks that have been converted from PDF. It says in the CSS that they were converted.

Hi, new to the forum but was hoping someone could help. I bought recently a Kobo book and yes same problem, large font. I have tried altering the CSS but probably did something wrong. And I am really anxious to read the book! But don't want to buy it again...
There is a folder CSS which contains the Kobo CSS and there is a template CSS. Both attached to this message. Can anyone fix it?
