OK. I've got EntropyPay or whatever it's called set up. I'm using HideMyAss to view the Kobo site. It's slow as molasses, but who cares, right. I'm 30 seconds away from getting my sweet, sweet Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ebook.

SO WHY DOES KOBO KEEP GIVING ME A "COUNTRY IS REQUIRED" ERROR WHEN IT'S ALREADY FILLED OUT??

I've tried this in both Firefox and Chrome. About to tear my hair out. Why must it be so complicated to BUY an ebook??

HELP?

Yep and I picked up a used paperback of it for that singular reason, but there are many other great stories in it!

She also expanded it into a full novel. ( I personally suspect not as good as the original, these expanded things rarely are. )

Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt series is a true pain in the ass. We have some books in the series here in the US but not all. Seems the UK may have them all. And we cannot buy the ones we'd want to fill in the series. We didn't have this problem before Agency pricing came about. So not only do they now charge more, they take away our access as well.

Actually, we have to blame Disney. They lobbied to have copyright extended or Mickey Mouse would currently be public domain.

Agency pricing has absolutely nothing to do with geo restrictions; those are due to the contract the publisher has with the author. It's exceedingly common for books to have different UK and US publishers, each with regional restrictions on where they are permitted to sell.

Before agency pricing, georestrictions were not really enforced. After agency pricing, georestrictions became actively enforced.

Oh, and update: Waterstones won't even SHOW me the UK-only ebooks via HideMyAss and WH Smith doesn't work -- I get an error message in Firefox when I hit "add to cart". I'm about to try WH Smith in Chrome.

But... yeah. Someone feel free to tell me again that geo restrictions are only hard to get around if you haven't tried. *lolsob*

* Feeling reeeeeeeeeeal good about the money I've probably wasted on Entropy Pay if I can't get these danged stores to cooperate.

Georestrictions have been in place a hell of a lot longer than Agency pricing, Jon. Eg, Fictionwise locked their site down hard for non-US customers YEARS before agency pricing came along. The event that made most sites sit up and take notice was Hachette in France threatening to sue US sites for selling books out of region to non-US customers. It has nothing whatsoever to do with Agency agreements.

I've no idea whether ADV contains that particular Le Guin story (I bought a copy some time ago but still haven't gotten around to reading it).

But anyone who's interested can get it DRM-free worldwide with no geo-restrictions as MultiFormat via Fictionwise at a sweet discount this week using their 55% off holiday coupon, which will probably stay good until Wednesday.

The blurb says it's got 46 stories, and at 4.50 USD after the discount (assuming you don't have a lingering Club membership to take the price down even further), that's less than 10 cents per story!

Forgive the question, but have you definitely told the proxy to make you appear as though you're in the UK? I don't think you can do that with the free version of "HideMyAss" - that's US only, to the best of my knowledge. Apologies if I'm wrong about that.

Well, I think I have. There's 2 UK servers listed in the Advanced Options.

That certainly looks right. You say there are two UK server options. Have you tried the other one?

There must be a solution to this. I've used "HideMyAss" to buy Georestricted books from the US and it's worked just fine for me.

Best guess is that the proxy is somehow mucking with the Kobo webpage, since "country" is the one thing that Kobo fills out FOR you.

http://www.openproxy.co.uk is ALSO encountering the same errors with Kobo, WH Smith, and Waterstones, so it's not HideMyAss's fault.

God, this has totally harshed my groove.

Yeah, I've tried them both and another proxy entirely (see above). Same behavior, presumably because the Kobo website code is conflicting with something.

What bookstore did you use?
