Yes, I know what you mean about tea bags - they seem to contain not much more than dust. But it's quite hard to find loose leaf tea, at any rate in the dreaded suburbs. There is probably much more choice in the city, but I don't often go in there these days except to go to a concert or the art gallery or museum - not to shop.

Maybe my New Year's resolution should be to find a shop within reach that sell decent tea!

Surely there must be online shops that will ship tea to you? I live in a remote area, but I get all my tea that way.

Thank you - good thought, so I have had a look. Some pretty scary prices, but maybe I should expect that? We are just getting into drinking tea, having been coffee drinkers pretty well exclusively (I'm talking freshly ground beans, not that instant stuff of course).

I shall certainly do some more research. At this stage, we find that we like black Chinese tea (such as Twinings' Russian Caravan, which we can get as loose tea if I hunt round a bit) and green tea. We have some Rooiboos too, which comes in big square bags - haven't seen it loose yet.

So I'm finding this an interesting thread to try to learn a bit more about different teas - thanks everyone for sharing what's in your cup!
