But, I thought even with the hidden browser we couldnt' download books through wifi? Don't you have to hack it for that? I could be wrong.......

You need the Wi Fi to download from B&N. If you want to download from the library or another web site, you need to download to your PC and then transfer the file to your Nook (called side-loading).

You would also lose the significant typographic improvements of the update. It's much more readable.

I know a friend is getting this for the holidays. I'll have to check the version and try the hidden browser but after searching for it, what exactly is the url being written about here that needs to be typed in?

Is it any web address?

Any URL. But your friend's will have the 1.1 version already, so it won't work.

It was bought about around a month ago as I'm not sure what the version will be. Is it forced upon the device at startup or registration?

And how does it connect to Wifi? When you try to access a URL it automatically detects a router or source?

If it won't work it's fine. My friend wasn't expecting to use the browser anyway which they wouldn't know it was even possible anyways.

It may not come with 1.1 in that case. The update is downloaded in background, when WiFi is enabled - so you can prevent an update by having WiFi off, but then that defeats the purpose of using the browser, assuming you have the 1.0 version.

In 1.0, when you type a URL in the search box, it launches the browse and, if you have WiFi enabled, it will load the page, otherwise it will show an error on the browser.

Well, there's a practical potential use for a web browser on the STR, the absence of which is quite irritating

I am in a hotel room after flying all day, reading on my STR. Now I would like to sync the book on the nook with the same book in the iPad nook app (for night reading).

This is normally a simple process. Except as now when getting onto the motel wifi requires accessing a button on a web page which I can't get to.
