I upgraded my 7" Nook Color CM7 to a 5" Samsung Galaxy Player. Now I truly have a portable tablet large enough for videos, games, and articles.

I can see the usefulness of a 7 inch tablet for portability and looked at the option myself. Bought an iPad for the silly reason that it fitted snugly into a bag I use and carry around all the time.

If there is 1 thing that annoys me with the tablet it is the weight and the thin profile causes it to dig into my hands and becomes uncomfortable. Lighter would be better and smaller would help with that

To each his own --- I have a 5" phone, but I find it too small for extended browsing, I reach for my Touchpad. Great size when you are out and about, fits in my jeans' front pockets. But browsing proper websites?

Now, I would agree that this information isn't sufficient to say "Apple is going to make a 7" iPad." But it's a pretty thin bit of information to say much of anything else. Again, the iPad is at 60% market share for global tablet sales, so if they cut back on 9.7" production then that's going to affect the number of 9.7" screens that suppliers are shipping.

How so? It could mean anything from the tablet market is saturate (thus everyone's sales is going down, as well as Apple's) to the 9.7" tablet market is saturated (so Apple's sales are down, but everyone else is unaffected). Of course, it could also mean that Apple is going down the drain and everyone else is going to see surging sales. But suggesting that would be blasphemous so I better not say that.

Anyhow, Apple probably made that comment about 7" tablets because they already had a 3.5" "tablet" and a 9.7" tablet and didn't want to dilute their market with a 7" tablet. Remember, more products incur more costs on Apple's side and makes purchasing decisions more complex for consumers. It is a lesson that Apple learnt in the late 1990s when they reduced their complex product line to a simple and highly differentiated product line. Since they didn't have plans for a 7" tablet at the time, they also needed to scare consumers away from 7" tablets to maintain their own sales. Thus their vocal dismissal.

I'm getting a Kindle Fire. It's only $200, but I'd really prefer a 10" Amazon tablet. The 7" is great for books and movies, but I'd prefer 10" for magazines and websites. I'm not so sure the ultimate size has been determined yet. I'm also sticking with my 6" eInk Kindle.

I am happy to report that I too have joined the 7" tablet family.

Thursday, a little after 6PM when I arrived home, I had a package waiting. My middle boy had said that he was sending me for Christmas a new super flashlight (I have every kind of light you can imagine) that would also double as a "remote." I couldn't figure out what he might have in mind.

Eureka! It was Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. A marvelous device at first look.

My son had been quizzing me about tablets, but I thought he was deciding what he wanted me to give him for a Christmas present. Clever lad.
