So, what was the purpose of the update? Any one know what the intended "system enhancements" are?

Here is a guide given by a XDA developer regarding patching the NT to its previous firmware to allow side loading and rooting in the meanwhile. Feel free to "Laurel" the post to promote visibility to the BN moderators and users. |

Very few Android devices allow outside apps, including the Nook Color. It's news that they ever left the box checked on the Tablet, but it's not news that they got around to unchecking it.
Until CM7/9 is a go on the NT, there's nothing to see here. |

IN the end , B&N are going to act in THEIR economic self interst, not in the interest of some hackers. B&N created the NT so that we could buy and enjoy B&N stuff, not so that hackers could use it for everything else but that.
If they go bankrupt, because people don't use the Nook Tablet to buy B&N content-its intended purpose-then NO ONE benefits, because NT buyers will be left with unsupported and discontinued hardware. That's just the way it is. File this under the "That's how captalism works" tab. I'm not surprised that B&N is taking steps to lock down their tablet. What surprised me is that they took so long. That said, its not really clear that this a full blooded attempt to lock down their tablet. We'll see. |

I hope it's just an oversight.
On the other hand, B&N keeps acting as if they're #1 in the market, when in actuality they're a distant also-ran to Amazon. They try to tie readers in to their books, their nook, their media, when they should be expanding and being the more-open alternative. I think it's their ego that makes them think they can get away with exclusivity, when their true strength would lie in the direction of an open standard. |

![]() I mean, B&N did launch a color reader tablet well before Amazon, and Kindle Fire is a "me too!" to what B&N did first. But, yeah... B&N did it first badly by completely yanking the developers around, delaying the app store, "announcing" the update through the home shopping channel, refusing to implement a lot of fan requests, and generally being as locked down as possible with this new iteration of their tablet. And I agree that hubris and stupidity is hurting their brand intensely. But... I kind of think Amazon is ALSO hubrisy, you know? There's not really a criticism here against B&N that isn't also applicable to Amazon. The biggest difference -- to me -- is that the Amazon website is easier to navigate and the reviewing system doesn't suxxor. ![]() |

B&N content is overpriced. Why would I want to pay $2.99 for Angry Birds from B&N, when Google only charges $0.99?

It's not about the nook color, that's just one small aspect it's about the entire ebook ecosystem. Amazon has been heading that direction for a long time, B&N resisted getting into the ebook world for most of that time until finally 'forced' to product the nook -- and done somewhat badly with the split screen etc. They continue to have issues with supplying content and are a small part of the overall book and ebook market. The one bright spot in the adventure has been the pricing of the nook color and the ability to root it. -- I almost bought one just for that aspect but in the end did not and now the Kindle Fire has arrived and has easy access to Amazon....and I have no need (or much desire) to root it.

Meh. I liked the split screen. I can't be the only one who did. And I HATED the Kindle keyboard.
![]() And I'll never get a Fire. I looked at my friend's... we were both so disappointed with it that she sent hers back. If CM7/9/wev gets on a Nook Tablet, I'll buy one of those. ![]() |

I agree the kindle keyboard is pretty silly, but for the time it was introduced, probably a good idea.
![]() Not sure what you don't like about the Fire but I love mine! |

I like the original Nook just fine. I have had no real problems with it. Works as good as the day i bought it.

Both the kindle keyboard and the original Nook design were about the best they could manage without the infrared touch screen tech they're using now.
