Question Confused by Personal Documents Settings

From what I can see on freshly acquired Kindle Touch:
  • If something ends up in the online "library" (with "Personal Document Archiving" on), I can't delete it from the device - I need to delete it first from the web interface, then from the device.
  • If I'll disable this archiving, I'll be able to delete items sent to Kindle directly on the Kindle.
  • I'm unable to read my personal docs via cloud reader or desktop app.

If all of the above is true, then it looks to me like this "archiving" is only useful for people with >1 physical Kindle. Or am I missing something here?

Yes you can delete the physical copy from your kindle by selecting "Move to Archived Item", amazon just name it differently.

Not just that. It also provides a backup copy of your personal doc.

I've noticed that this is the case for a .mobi book that I've put there this way. This is not the case for a Instapaper delivery - the menu simply doesn't pop up on long-press until I remove entry from the online interface and sync the Kindle.

I guess so. This is probably important to anyone making notes/highlights - I usually already have a backup of the book itself somewhere, and I don't care about the notes I might add.

Yes, this started happening with some of my Calibre new feeds too. I thought I had done something weird like toggled a "read only" setting.

'Subscription' mobi gets messed up if it is archived as a PD, and you need to delete from MYK before you can delete from your Kindle. It will work okay if it is side loaded (via USB or downloaded using kindle browser from instapaper theoretically).

If you use Windows, you can get the Amazon Send To Kindle app and use that to send a mobi downloaded from instapaper; it has an option to deliver wirelessly without archiving to PD. Wish they'd share the secret handshake that yields that behavior.
