Yes, I think my point is that it would never be pronounced that way outside of UK English. Otherwise we need to add words like 'tomato' to the list.

Is counting the different pronounciations from verb to noun allowed?
a la prod'uce being the product and pro'duce to make the prod'uce. |

I'm confused. I'm differentiating between PAT-n't and PAY-t'nt. The first is a noun/verb and the second an adjective, in American. It's not a tomayto/tomahto thing.

So I was not anticipating having to arbitrate. Regarding produce [pruh-doos] to bring into existence and [prod-oos] vegetables of fruit, yes different pronunciation and meaning. On the other hand as near as I have been able to find from looking at a number of sources for patent it may be pronounced [pat-nt] or [peyt-nt], but both the meaning registration of a process or product or obvious may attach to either pronunciation.
All other examples offered so far definitely fit the question; including Issybird's original list as well of course lead, and all of Daithi's list. It would have been simpler if the example of bow had lead to sow as [soh] to sow a field with grain and [sou] a female swine. Tear as tear fabric or shed a tear would have been another clear case. So let Issybird or Daithi be next. |

I'm not taking the win from Issybird, but I thought of another one--
wind as in the thing that blows, and wind as in wind something up. Last edited by Daithi; 12-19-2011 at 10:38 PM. Reason: my grammar sucks |

Ok, here is a puzzle in the same vein.
A homonym is a word that is spelled the same and pronounced the same but has different meanings, and an antonym is a word that has the opposite meaning of another word. Can you name five homonyms that are their own antonyms? For example, "cleave" can mean either "to separate" or "to hold on tight". |

arris might fit that definition because builders say to arris something is to take the arris off. i.e. they really mean to de-arris.
the in in inflamable is not the same as the in in insoluble. If it was..... so possibly inflamable 'could' (long bow) mean not flamable and flamable as well ![]() |

Condone means both to tolerate and to disapprove.
To table a motion means the opposite in Brit and Yank speak, if that counts. This side of the pond, it means to drop it; t'other side it means to consider it. Last edited by issybird; 12-20-2011 at 01:24 AM. |
