I can think of one instance where not needing to authorize your machine to a specific account can be convenient - library books. These are temporary so as long as you don't switch machines before you finish reading previously borrowed books, machine-specific authorization isn't a big deal.

Or where you only use the machine to de-DRM the title. But really, I think it's always better to authorize the ADE installation unless you're in a situation where you have too many authorizations.

yah, most of the time you only notice DRM, when it's too late (that is, when it blocks books)

My ADE installation keeps de-authorizing itself... I have about 4 or 5 books, that can't be read due to that. (another reason why I prefer to buy from Amazon, as at least the Kindle application doesn't have the same problem...)

Not that I have a problem with it, as the first thing I do after downloading a book is to clear any infections... and the infected books don't even leave the virtual pc they've been downloaded on...

OT at this point, but the first place to look Sweetpea is at A-V or "registry cleaner" applications. These seem to be the most common cause of de-registration I've run across. I've never had a machine spontaneously de-register itself. Of course, no book needs to be read by ADE for longer than the 5 minutes or so it takes to get the book and remove the DRM from it and convert to MOBI format.

Personally, I would avoid any DRM scheme that requires any sort of authorization by device, especially if it was linked to the OS installed (I have heard of people running linux getting in trouble with ADE for updating their OS).

I don't mind the B&N system quite as much, but even there, there can be problems. I recently downloaded the B&N app on my android phone and later purchased a book over their website and downloaded it to my computer. Later I tried to download the book to my phone and now the book refuses to open on the phone. I know I can get around this problem, but for people with less technical background, I can see it being a real problem.

Personally, I flat out refuse to buy any eBook from a source that I can't overcome the DRM for. I can't avoid DRM completely, but I can refuse to buy from sources where I can't strip it. (No iBooks, for example. Not now, not ever.)

One person's bug is another persons (or group such as libraries) hard and fast requirement for privacy....
