I peeked in to say goodnight
When I heard my child in prayer
Send dear God, some scarlet ribbons,
Scarlet ribbons for my hair.

All the stores were closed and shuttered
All the streets were dark and bare
In our town no scarlet ribbons
Not one ribbon for her hair.

Through the night my heart was aching
Just before the dawn was breaking
I peeked in and on her bed
In gay profusion laying there
I saw ribbons, scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair.

If I live to be a hundred
I will never know from where
Came those lovely scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair...

Tis the season! Good morning, everyone! Really cold day today, but nice hot East India Company's Assam tea to warm me up!

Buying, not making presents? Sewing quilts or hammering together cradles? Big Business vs The Occupy Movement... I wonder which will claim victory after the New Year? Me... I do both. Make some and buy some. But in fact, I only make them because I like to make things and have the time to do so. But I don't have a long list of people to gift anyway so it's pretty easy for me.

Reservations are in for tonight's dinner at my favorite Mexican restaurant. This is the ONLY night of the year that I allow myself to drink enough to call myself 'drunk.' I will have my traditional pitcher of Margaritas, and my wife will have to wheel me home!

But perhaps another cup of Assam tea to get the morning going!

Hmmm. Russian Caravan without any Lapsang Souchong just seems wrong. But maybe with a longer steep it will be better? Worth a try, I guess.

In my cup: Peet's Pride of Port.

Ridge Lytton Springs to go with boeuf bourguignon (Julia Child's classic recipe.)

Sadly, my red wine headache hit big time. It does tend to inhibit enjoyment.

Finished my morning fresh sqeezed OJ. Now, a cup of Peet's Scottish Breakfast tea.
So glad he is doing so much better with you. It really is too bad the original owners were not able to help him, as it sounds like they tried their best (and I agree about the vet).

Not only the time rquired to do it, but you need the talent . You wouldn't want anything I made, that's for sure. I do agree that something well crafted by a friend just for you is one of the best things you can receive.

In the days of yore, last February that's, what did I know about teas? We went to London specifically as a tea day trip which included paying a visit to the mightiest of the tea world. Fortnum and Mason, The East India Company and Masterclass tea tasting in Tea Smith.
I bought Russian Caravan because I have heard about it from Stitchawl and Fortnum and Mason is a big name Yes, it was worth a try. I would always wonder what such a reputable brand sells as Russian Caravan.

Beautiful day here. Coldish but with clear sky. I can see the mountains on the south side of the valley, 200 km away. Winter. The moon is still above the horizon. All in all, it is very pretty.

Had half an apple, a machined soft egg and rye bread for breakfast with butter and goat cheese. Now filter coffee.

Later I might make some keemun.

Too bad for the headache. Strange though. Usually people get this from whites that are more poisonous.

With boef bourguignon I usually drink a coarse wine from the region like Pinot Noir so that it contrasts the sweetness of the meat. And washes it away leaving the mouth ready for the next byte. Or, smoother, a Crozes Hermitage, that might be similar to the California wine you had, Shiraz I imagine. Gamay, like in Beaujolais, is too soft and also too low in tannins for the job.

Hi Serena,
welcome.

I always found that Assam tea demands milk and may be sugar. Personally, I prefer teas in themselves, that is why I now drink mostly keemun (for black tea) that releases very little tannin. Tannin, pleasant as it can be - and I enjoyed it very much in the past - it is really not so good for us humans.

Spoiler:
"Since tannin’s effect is to dry up watery contents in the body, the skin also becomes rough and brittle. Its mental effect is similar to liquor or a narcotic drug, which gives a kick for a shorter duration and thereafter, gives rise to lethargy and listlessness. This makes one to gulp another cup of tea to regain earlier euphoria. This leads to addiction and usually these persons feel drowsy and morose if they do not get their ‘cuppa’ to stimulate them. "http://www.miyerbamate.com/content/Y...Band%2Btea.htm

Obviously this is an example of adverse publicity, but nevertheless ...

But if you add milk or/and sugar it/they override the tea flavour. Drinking it as a breakfast tea would produce the same effect.
If it is really a good Assam, such as single estates produce, then it has its own flavour. (That is what I love about good Assam )

Cuppa #3
Russian Caravan (F&M)
Put a good heaped tsp and steeped for 4min.
Drinkable Weak Keemun but still a pleasant tea.

With my breakfast I had Assam Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe Tea (F&M). It doesn't stand for Assam on its own but a good one for breakfast tea.
There is only one more Assam that I have at home but I have yet to try. It is The First Estate Assam from The East India Company. I suspect I shall open it around the time when I purchased it one year ago by the end of February.
