Glitch with DIPHTHONGS in filenames?


I think there is a problem at least with ÄÖÜ in filenames. I use the latest CB from 15-12-2011. But the problem exists longer:

1) Copy a file (*.TXT; *.EPUB) with diphthongs (e.g. österreich.txt) somewhere onto the reader
2) Restart the reader completely
3) Problems: every comment in every book will be deleted; cached thumbs vanish; file names with diphthongs aren't shown properly; last opened pages of every book will be forgotten; new-flag for each book will be set;
4) Restarting the reader doesn't solve it --> on every restart everything mentioned in (3) will be deleted once more
5) Delete the file with diphthongs --> problem solved

could you try it in "safe mode" with standard firmware?

A number of users is using filenames with Cyrillic, Georgian letters with no problem. I wonder what is so special about o umlaut.

Is it in internal mem or external card?

Tested now - results:

Tested with a a file named ÄÖÜ.TXT with 'Test ÄÖÜ' as content.

After restarting in safe mode

- file name is displayed properly
- file content not displayed properly but different than with PRS+ (I guess the file is not in UTF-8)
- bookmarks and comments doesn't vanish - everything seems to be up und running

After restarting in PRS+ mode mentioned problems arise once more. So problems are reproducible on my 350.

Analogus, what you describe might be a result of generic file system corruption.
Could you test if deleting / adding files (multiple operations) breaks it in safe mode.

File name should also be in UTF8.
When was the last time you've used setup.exe to install PRS+? There was a bug in, mm, 2.0.14 I think, which requires full re-flash to fix.

I think the last complete reflash is made with version 2.0.14. I'm not able to do a reflash here on this PC - so reflashing possible in approx. 7 hours. I'll give feedback then.

For now:

- I copied several *.txt files in UTF-8 with diphthongs in file name and file content onto the reader over USB

- restart in save mode:
- filenames and content OK.
- tried to delete more than one file with 'options - delete books' --> just ONE book will be deleted.
- EDIT: Problems with lost notes etc. even in save mode

- restart in PRS+ mode:
- file names corrupted - content OK
- tried to delete more than one file with 'options - delete books' --> just ONE book will be deleted

So - yes, problems with file system persist even in save mode.
I have the suspicion, that issue 248 (glitch in deleting pictures) is solved with updating the firmware with a complete reflash...

Thank you very much I re-saved the files in Unicode to make them work but I definitely wanted this fix! Any clue why my fathers computer can read those files fine, yet they were bad on my computer (both Windows 7)?

Complete reflashing done with newest installer. In short:

Problems persist

More words:

- PRSP_350_2.0.17rc3
- flashing done without failure
- first testing with 2.0.17 - later testing with custom build from main repository today

Problems:

- glitsch with deleting pictures (issue 248) still exists in 2.0.17 and c.b.
- problems with ÄÖÜ in filenames still exists in 2.0.17 and c.b. as described above
- filenames with 2.0.17 and with c.b. looks strange

I tested it even on my second PRS350.

Update firmware with complete reflashing --> same behaviour

Is there any further information you can provide on the image deleting bug? Are images on IM/SD/MS, are they selected for standby screen, does it matter which images you select?
I've been trying to reproduce the problem, but no luck so far.

I figured out an issue. My fathers FB2 converter was making text files in ANSI, and they would display on his computer but not mine for some reason. I set his converter to use 1251. Still won't show on my computer for some reason...

Also the PRS+ setting for text resizing doesn't work, I have S set to 120 and M to 130 and they are still at stock settings with a huge difference between them.

EDIT: I tried UTF-8 formatting in the FB2 converter and it seems to work on my computer now. I hope someone can provide an explanation to why my Win7 computer couldn't read the files converted from FB2 to both ANSI and 1251 yet my fathers Win7 computer could.

I can't help you with the first point, but on the second: the text scale options only work on LRFs. Also, changing the values will only affect books that are still 'new' at that point, i.e. never opened. Does this explain what you're seeing?

There is no cyrillic in ANSI. By the way, PRS+ has built-in fb2epub converter. It fails on about 5-10% of fb2-s, so far it was caused by errors in fb2 itself, but improving it to support most common fb2 errors is planned.

TXT file should be in UTF8, then it will work no matter what.

"Resizing" affects LRF only and only after restart. And it would work as expected only with books which haven't been opened as quisvir pointed out.

There is no such things as Cyrillic in ANSI, it was always 1251.
Your father's PC is probably Russian version and is using Russian as default locale, unlike yours.

I tryed to find out more. As you see I have 2 PRS350. Both of them does have now the newest flashed firmware with the newest custom build on it. They differ now slightly just in having other PRS+ tweakings. On one of the reader the problem suddenly (?) was not longer existent.

Normally I do that:

When there is (whatever) problem with my reader (e.g. sometimes the reader wants to reformat itself) I copy the whole content of the root (including all folders and files) onto my PC, reformat the reader and copy those folders and files back onto the reader. No problem. Every book, picture and note is there again.

After lots of tests on both units I now come to that conclusion:

There is (at least) no direct glitch with PRS+ concerning deleting pictures and other files.

After having problems with delting files on both units I deleted folders on the reader which aren't directly necessary for the content like 'cache', 'synch', 'thumbnails', 'images', 'GameSave', ...

--> the glitch with deleting pictures vanishes...

Sorry for the false alarm...

Glitch with diphthongs:

This problem still exists on both readers. Files with ÄÖÜ in the filename confuces the system and forces the reader to do a new setup, forgetting the thumbs, notes and reading progress.

Edit: I'm running WIN7 64. Checkdisk done on the reader allready. It didn't help. Just deleting some files and folders mentioned above solved the picture glitch.
