You probably can't purchase Kindle books directly on the Sony (unless it's a Wi-Fi model and you use any web browser function to order them from the Amazon site).
But if you have a google for the words "apprentice" and "alf", then you can have a look at the fairly simple steps required to move Kindle books to an ePub reader and vice versa and see if it's something you wouldn't mind doing on a regular basis. |

Personally, I like Kindle, use one for pleasure reading + studies (sommelier). Also use Kindle as part of package for clients. The support is via forum, but the device is light, reliable, intuitive, and seem to be more of the authors & text books I need. The last reason I like it is ability to upload a personal document, make notes, carry with, upload research clips I've collected as pdf for further study. very handy @ reasonable price. Good luck on your search, BCP |

I myself have a kindle keyboard. I like it, it is a good reader. That said I am getting a sony t1 for Christmas. The kindle's interface is so old and quite frankly, ugly. T1 interface is light years better from what I have seen.
Given how easy it is to remove drm and convert to any format required going with the sony was a no brainer for me. Especially now that it appears they've resolved the page turn bug. |

I was really surprised at the KDXG and how poorly the support for it was. Amazon made it seem like it was the new generation just like the K3. But all it was was the old KDX with a new screen. |

The biggest reason that I couldn't consider a Kindle is that I don't care for the font options available. (That's putting it mildly.) But each of the readers has benefits the others don't have; some of these can be mitigated (with the use of Calibre, for example) and some cannot. One of the things I liked about the Kobo was the feel, which is funny since you hate it. But I liked the rubbery, grippy texture on the back of the reader.
As much as I hemmed and hawed over my decision (Sony T1 vs. Kobo) I knew I would grow to love/cherish/passionately and vehemently advocate for whichever one I chose. Ultimately, I found a great deal on the Sony and went for it. I am going to enjoy the folder organization options, and the (perceived?) greater screen contrast of the Sony, just as I would have enjoyed the fun user stats, ability to left-justify text in the reader, ability to change the screen refresh rate, and the "backside texture" (sorry for the image) of the Kobo. And if I had gone with a Kindle, I would have enjoyed the ease of purchasing from Amazon right from my reader. Honestly, we are "suffering" from a wealth of excellent choices! If you can determine the single most important thing that your reader MUST do (or NOT do), I would go with the one that matches up best with that trait, order away, and don't look back! |

I am reading the ePub version of 11/22/63 and it has embedded fonts. It looks quite nice. I did convert it to Mobipocket jest to see how it looks and it doesn't look nearly as nice. This is one reason to go with an ePub capable device. When the ePub is made this well, it's a pleasure to read (as long as you like the story).

I did not know this. I must not have attempted to buy any of their books yet. This said, it is very easy to purchase from the US Kindle store while living in Canada. I have done it a few times with no issues.

Unless you have a U.S. based credit card, the Nook and Barnes & Nobel are unavailable outside the U.S. But bcgirl has already narrowed her choice down to the Kindle and the Sony.
My preference would be the Sony, but then I have a 650 and it is everything I think an ereader should be. The T1 is interesting as an eink android tablet. The $79 ad supported Kindle is not available in Canada, which leaves the choice between the $99 Kindle and the (now) $119 Sony. Of course, if she can find a 350, I think that would still be the her best choice. |
