I do not see the point.

Because the point of e-ink is that it does not emit light. Now with this cover it does. So e-ink loses its main advantage. |

But this is not an LCD screen. Main screen and display is still eink. So, based on the article and my understanding of the new concept, will keep eink advantages.

The point of eInk is to provide a bistable, high contrast reflective display. Which doesn't need a built-in light to be viewed in good lighting and isn't overpowered by the sun. And barely draws any power in these situations. This doesn't take away any of that.

I'm pretty happy with my current lighting solution (Kindle Keyboard with lighted cover) but this one looks pretty good too. I wouldn't upgrade to get it, but would be happy to have it as part of the package if I was upgrading to get something else.

I find this pointless. Blacklight causes eye strain.

This is so cool, I hope those quickly become standard issued with every reader.

In regular rooms the difference will be barely noticeable. In dark rooms e-ink is useless, and this will be a wonderful feat! I think overall e-ink devices might win out of it. When the light is disabled, the white will be greyed out a bit. When the light is enabled, the blacks will be greyed out a bit. A small compensation for being able to use the device in ALL light environments! And if you ask me, I use the reader more often in dark rooms than in outside sunlight! I love my garden but I love my bed even more! If you ask me, EVERY E-ink READER SHOULD HAVE A NIGHT AND DAY MODE (meaning reading the book normal, or in negative). I don't understand the desire for an e-ink display to have its own lighting. E-ink has (roughly) the same light-reflecting properties as paper. Why would my lighting need to be any dfferent than it is for a paperback book?

(I mostly read on my bed, which has poor lighting, but a reading lamp remedies the problem.) Last edited by Kevin8or; 12-16-2011 at 06:53 AM. |

I use an eReader for the same mix of reasons most do. Why do you use a eReader?
