That is pretty surprising that Amazon would give those figures. Glad to see that the Kindles are selling well.

Well, they're pretty vague numbers. It's unclear which devices are selling in what amounts, and it's hardly enough to know how it's doing compared to Nook Color or ye olde iPad.

A blue shirt at my local podunk Best Buy told me that they're selling about 50 Kindle Fire's a day. I was surprised, honestly. I guess they're finding their way underneath a lot of Christmas trees this year.

Thanks afa. ucfGrad93, agree. Kali Yuga, it is only reasonable that the bulk of their new sales are going to be the Fire and the Touch Screen Kindles with most going with the Fire. There will be a few knowledgeable diehards getting the keyboard Kindles, a few getting the cut rate $79 machines for pesents, but for 50 or 100 more you can get the Fire, the Cloud, Silk, a bit of Prime, COLOR. And it is Christmas! Masterful marketing. Hey. I would even go so far as to say "it is magic!" |

Lawsuit coming in 3....2....1.... (kidding) Joking aside... Those are some big numbers. How many of them are upgrades and such, though? Good on Amazon, though, for selling that many. It's impressive (if the numbers are factual). |

Yes but how many are being kept and not returned? I mean just because 1000000 Kindles were purchased doesn't mean some percentage weren't returned during that time either. There is no such thing as a 100% satisfaction with any product.

Also, a variety of Kindle models are in Amazon's electronic best seller list. There's really no way to know how much of what is selling with such imprecise info. | |

There's no indication whatsoever that the return rate on Kindle Fire's is any higher than any other electronics. You might as well ask, "Yes, [insert random product] is selling well, but how many [insert random product]'s are being returned?"

MSNBC has a bit more detail: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45686657...-kindles-week/ And the reason for the release is pretty clear: the bad-mouthing was impacting the stock price. And, let's be honest, whether the sales are upgrades or not doesn't matter. Money is money whether it comes from a new customer or an old one. (Hence the press release to calm the stockholders.) If anything, upgrade sales will cascade the used models as hand-me-downs or used-hardware sales so the install base is still going to grow. Likewise, it doesn't much matter which of the five models is getting the sales. Big sales for the eink models? Big sales for Fire? It's still big bucks for Amazon and it's still bad (competitive) news for *somebody* else. |

All these sales doesn't mean profits for Amazon.

Sit here by the warm "Fire" my friend and learn of the tale of Bezos. He was one who sold razors, I mean eReaders that connected right into his store of eBooks, and his videos, and indeed into the giant warehouse of anything that a man or bird might want. Profits galore at that store, friend. Profits galore! (We don't know the real mix, where the profits are, but I guarantee that Jeff, he who is Bezos, does.) Was that a poem? Maybe not. A point? Oh yes. |
