What if you set up a separate banking account with debit card for your Kindle purchases. You would have control over how much money is in the account and could easily add more to the account whenever you want.

In short, they said "de-register it" (but I think un-enabling the credit card could also work). Here's Amazon's reply:
Hello from Amazon.com. Thank you for writing to us about restricting a registered Kindle from purchasing content from the Kindle store. One way to do this is to deregister the Kindle from your account. When you want to add content to that Kindle, you can simply re-register the Kindle to your account, make a purchase or download content that is already purchased using Content Manager, and then deregister the Kindle. To register or deregister Kindle on Amazon.com: 1. Visit http://www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle 2. Sign into your Amazon.com account 3. If Kindle is not registered, complete the registration instructions provided. 4. If Kindle is already registered, adjust the settings in the "Your Kindle(s)" section. You can also change Kindle's registration directly from the Kindle menu. I've included instructions for that below. ***** HOW DO I CHANGE REGISTRATION SETTINGS FROM THE KINDLE MENU? If you have access to the Kindle and prefer to change registration directly, follow these steps: 1. Move the wireless switch on the back of your Kindle to the "ON" position. 2. Press the Home key to make sure you are on the Home screen. 3. Scroll to Menu and press the select wheel. 4. Select "Settings" from the menu. 5. Scroll to the Account Name section and select "Deregister." 6. Select "OK" from the confirmation screen or select "Cancel" if you wish to abort the process. 7. Wait for Kindle to process the request. The account name will be blank and the Register option will appear when deregistration is successful. |

Bob,
Once you see how much more you can do with Kindle, you won't have any purchase regrets. Try Ebay, that's how I sold my 500 and 505. Good Luck ![]() |

Amazon does immediately send you an email every time something is purchased. It's my understanding that they are quite good about refunds if something is purchased by mistake, too. Is your son old enough to understand not to buy something without asking you first? Is he basically well-behaved and responsible? If so, you may not need any method of prevention besides a rule and discipline.
Daffy4u's idea about a separate account is also quite good. I know people who do this for all online purchases. They have an account for that purpose only with a very low balance. If they want to buy something larger, they transfer the money in right before they buy. That way if it's compromised, the thief can't do much damage. |

We gave my 18 year old a credit card (a few years ago). He is involved in alot of shool activities and they traveled alot. The card was for him to buy lunch/dinner when on these outings. He has several times latley used it to go out for dinner with his girl friend. I brought it up with him, his answer was, "well it was ONLY $12." Not the point. So, yes while I would expect that he wouldn't purchase stuff without asking, however he has more reading time than I and the Kindle seems to make it easy and not password protected in any way. Quote:

You and your son would make 1-Click purchases on the new separate debit/credit card that you control. Any other purchases you make through Amazon would use the shopping cart, so that you could use a different card. That is the only way I think of that will allow your son to be able to use all of the features of the Kindle with you still having control on how much is spent. If Unbox requires 1-Click (I'm unfamiliar with the service) and it's a more important service to you, then the only other thing I can think of is to keep your son's Kindle de-registered. You would have to download the books for him (maybe onto and SD card). I hope Amazon comes up with a better solution because I think it would be helpful in a lot of situations and would increase Kindle sales. ![]() |
