why downloaded epub have no thumbnail pictures?

the novels that came with my sony T1 all have thumbnails pictures, but if I put novels I downloaded off the internet in epub format on the reader, there is no thumbnail pictures.

How can I get pictures for the downloaded epubs?

At first to ensure the epubs which you downloaded do have Cover pictures.

Try: cut these epubs from your T1, paste to your PC.
unplug T1, wait untill T1 finished loading
plug T1 again, copy the epubs from your PC to T1
unplug T1 wait untill T1 finished loading

how do I find out if an epub file have cover picture?

I mean the epub that came with the T1, is just a single epub file with no picture file attached yet they all have thumbnail pictures when displayed on the reader.

I had to use Calibre to "liberate" a couple of my epubs before the cover would show on the device. So in my case it was likely down to some sort of DRM foul-up.

It depends on where you got the book....
For most non-DRM books I obtain, I can add the cover via calibre's conversion, then zap it on to my reader.

Places like Project gutenberg are plain vanilla epubs with no fancy covers, but I always add a cover that I like afterward.

With DRM stuff, I get what I get, and don't bother with that. I don't buy drm stuff, but I do borrow from the library or download the freebies.

A lot of commercial ePub don't have a proper cover. They have some generic garbage that as a thumbnail can look like just text.

So true. Lord of the Rings was one of those. Seriously, why?

Supposedly, it is because the eBook rights to the cover art was not granted when the contracts were signed. But I think it's so the publisher doesn't have to give any money to the cover artist for the sale of the eBook.

Using Calibre and the T1, you should be able to have any thumbnail of your choice, even with DRM'd books. You just need to tick the checkbox Upload separate cover thumbnails for book in Prefs - Plugins - Device Interface - Sony PRST1 - Customize. This thumbnail gets sent to the T1 when you use send-to-device for a book (epub, pdf, txt).

Wow, thanks for that!! I've been trying to figure out why all those covers were showing up in pictures!! There are so many settings in calibre, it's hard to find the right one sometimes.
