			A propelling pencil might be what Americans call a mechanical pencil: it doesn't need sharpening and one can refill with more pencil lead (actually graphite).  Another case of being divided by a common language. |

			mine = lead crayon = pencil so a "porte-crayon" is something which hold pencils, and a "porte-mine" is something which holds the *lead*, and is therefore like a pencil. |

			well, i'm not really familiar with that use, but it makes sense, because the leads which are held by those can be used with just the fingers, so are rather like a pencil already (we call a conté a "crayon conté", although not charcoal...), and therefor the holders are logically "porte-crayon".
