In contrast to those who've spent less with e-readers, my wife and I spent MORE this year than we have in the past.....
Previously, all our reading came from the library. I go through anywhere from 2 to 5 books per week, and my wife would frequently read some of the same books. With the e-readers, we still get some books from the library, but we've purchased titles from B&N and a couple other sources. My wife is reading a lot more with the Nook than she did on paper, and is exclusively electronic. I'm still combining e-books and paper since some of what I read isn't available in e-book form from the library but is on paper... So, overall, our spending has gone up at least a couple hundred dollars from when we were exclusively on paper. |

I am not sure how to add it up.
But my wife (who originally said she did not think she would like a ebook reader) loves it. And a recent purchase for a mother-in-law suddenly has 3 people reading our electronic library. So with the Terry Pratchett, Jasper Fford, Kathy Reichs, Evanovitch, and several new authors this year ... I am guessing about $300-400 on Amazon. But divide this by 3 and the $113/person does not sound so bad. We also took about 4 cases of paperback books to Goodwill so we dont have to pay to store them (or pay to move them). We are hoping to get rid of the storage area this year so the books took up some small percentage of $160/month. |

I hardly bought books this year. Nothing really interesting came up. I didn't keep track (stupid!) but I think I bought a total of 5 or 6 books.

I have spend a lot less in 2011 for ebooks than I did in 2010 or 2009 but I did put in $200 for a kindle fire when I already had a kindle3. In fact I don't think I spent over $50 this year and I spent around $100 last year and almost $200 the year before. I still have many many ebooks that I have not gotten to. I don't have to buy anything for a few years and I'm a 2 book a week person.

I have probably spent a couple hundred dollars this year on e-books, but in the process probably acquired about 400 e-books. So, my acquisition costs have gone down dramatically while my enjoyment level is as high or higher than ever.
I would be remiss if I did not give full credit to the the agency publishing cartel for making me a much better consumer. I used to be as happy as a lamb buying e-books for 9.99 but when "agency pricing" came into effect I decided it was time to teach myself better buying habits. Public Domain sites, Got a library card, Read Free at Barnes & Noble, Free Books, Daily Deals. I also maintain a list of non-agency publishers, for those occasions when booksellers like a Kobo offer discount codes. As far as agency publishers, unless it's 2.99 or less - or no deal, I can find plenty of other publishers whom I've come to like to spend my money with, when I'm feeling extravagant. So - many thanks to agency publishers for training me to be a smarter and happier consumer. |

I spend several hundred a year on books, but I have absolutely no doubt that I've spent less this year than I did in previous years, and Agency Pricing is the reason.

This is an interesting exercise! This is the my first digital year and overall I think I spent less with a grand total of $641.72 on 303 books with the most going to :
Kobo - $209 (major hoarding with 50% off & $2 codes ![]() Fictionwise - $163 (more hoarding with frequent 55-60% off codes) Amazon - $110 I've also accumulated another 500+ freebies. Pre-digital I would have purchased 6-8 new Big 6 paperbacks/month and spent $503 and probably spent that much again on used paperbacks. Right now there are 55 agency books sitting on my wishlist that I absolutely will not buy in any format until the Big 6 get a clue. I purchased exactly 1 fully priced agency book when I first fired up my nook and haven't gotten any others unless they were on special. I will only spend up to $4.99 on an agency book if it is on my wish list and that has only happened once. I've converted a handful of keeper DTBs to EPUB but never for more than $0.99. Along the way I've discovered a number of new authors and branched out into some new genres. Letting go of favorite agency authors hasn't been very painful because at any time I've got dozens of books I'm dying to get to. |

Yes, I bought lots of books this year. Mainly because I got my first reader this year and I have been building an e-library.

Great question - it made me do some homework. I bought 25 ebooks (so far) in 2011, and spent $233.83. Of these I read 12 of them cover to cover, 5 were basically reference, and currently reading 3. So that leaves 6 I never started or didn't like at all.
I like the tips here for saving money on ebooks - very helpful |

More than usual since getting my ereader exactly a year ago, but not an exhorbitant amount since I love, love, love the digital library!
B&N charged me for all the 'free' books I bought there ![]() I think the glitch may have happened when I bought a second NC for my sister and loaded it up with all my books. I'm avoiding them like the plague these days. |
