Angry About to chunk this d*^& thing (rant)

Anybody want to do a straight-up swap? My 6-month old PE for a Kindle Fire, Nook Color, or such?

This is the THIRD TIME I've run into a seemingly fatal glitch (not counting that week that I went without sound) and I'm sick and tired of it!

I had just installed Game Dev Story from the Market (10 cent sale yesterday) and something went wiggy. Now I can't get to ANYTHING, not even via USB, because the processes com.entouragesys.android.reader and com.entouragesys.android.setup keep "stopping unexpectedly," and continue to do so every time I hit "Force Close." I've tried rebooting, hibernating, menu/rotate reflashing Allmine, everything I know to do.

And before somebody gripes at me about "not being content with dingo, etc. etc.," save your breath. I'm not pushing the envelope here. I mostly use my PE for READING, with occasional email and web browsing. I've uninstalled every app I DON'T use, I don't have the thing rooted, I don't overclock.

Is it too much to expect for a device to work for more than a month straight without needing shock therapy or e-prozac?

If I can't recover my library from it this time or FIX the stupid thing, I'm doing a Golden Dingo reflash and selling it. Or giving it so someone I hate.

I wouldn't be so pissed off about the whole thing if it wasn't for the fact that I LOVE my PE when it works.

if you have the ermine golden with the market installed and library on sd card you will not have the issue. also combined with titanium backup on sd card you can recover in minutes. i do not understand why people are complaining about a unit with 10x functionality of a kindle for which they paid less than what a kindle costs.
this is not for the faint hearted.

One other thing to keep in mind - this device was never intended to work with Google Market. Because of this Google Market does not know what apps can safely run here and what apps can't. Normally it would filter out incompatible apps but since access to Market was added it allows you to install apps that may not work properly with this device.

Simply put you're using a device that is no longer supported because its company went under. You're using modified software and you're doing things with it that it wasn't originally intended to do. You can't now start complaining that some things don't work right. This would be like putting a Geo Metro engine in a Hummer and then complaining that it doesn't work reliably or have enough power to pull it along.

If you want reliability then by all means reflash golden Dingo and install the approved original Ermine update. Don't put Google Market back on it and do without.

If you don't want the headaches then by all means sell it. There are definitely faster and better tablets out there that are supported by companies that are still in existence. The Edge is original in that it contains eInk and LCD in the same device so if you take it for what it is it will be just fine for you.

For the record my dad just got the Kindle Fire and I hate that damn thing! Sure it's fast and it's neat but you're VERY LIMITED as to what you can do with it. It felt like it was designed for a five year old and I honestly believe that being idiot-proof was the key to its design. I suppose you can say the same thing about iProducts.

BUT - For a 63 year old man who is dying from Cancer and who doesn't want to take the time to think and to learn how to do things anymore.. well it's a perfect fit. His biggest complaint is that he has to dig out his old kindle anytime he wants to sit outside and read!

I have two PEs and an EE. Straight Ermine, no modifications. Zero Google Market access, zero problems with any tablet.

I never had issues with apps. if something did not work, just uninstall it.
market on it is great.
NAND is not very good quality and you may need to mark bad blocks....
BTW my not yet 3years old daughter is using the PE just fine once properly configured!!!

I have to agree with obsessed2, no market on my EE - no problems.

Also MasterTec has summed up the situation that all PE users should be aware of.

I agree with MasterTec, but I would like to change the metaphor: I see this more akin to putting a Hummer engine into a Geo Metro. You'll get wonderful power to run all the accessories you never imagined you could use, but you have to be careful or you'll blow the transmission, the chassis or the whole car.

(and I say this as the proud owner of a 3-cylinder Geo Metro! )

Johnseeking, a good rant every now and then is just the thing. I have a feeling you'll sort it out, and maybe even learn something in the bargain.

I do not think that anything from the market can blow your pe really (may be the rom and partition tools and chainfire 3d)

I'm back up and running. Hellbent golden, stock ermine. Only "essential" apps. Mostly. Will update when/if it goes up in bits again.

There is a website, Android Developers, that syncs their servers directly with the Google Android Market and every App that is available for download on the Android Market is available there as well. They list paid Apps that appear on the Google Android Market but I have never tried to buy one. I don't think you can, but because the site syncs with Google the Apps are listed.

The FREE Apps that appear on the Android Market can be downloaded directly from Android Developers, no Mods or Android Market required. I have downloaded many Apps from here with no problem, but nothing that is going to push the Edge to the limits. Usually what I do is browse the Google Market and if I see an App I like that I think the Edge meets the requirements for, I head to Android developers with my Edge to download it. Sometimes newer Apps won't show up right away until after the server sync occurs.

http://androiddev.orkitra.com/download/apps/

http://androiddev.orkitra.com/?page_id=254

This is a legitimate website and the website owner has several Apps featured on the Google Android Market:

OP, if the edge isn't working for you, you should get rid of it. I definitely agree that the edge is not for the faint of heart. I primarily use mine for playing with android things, or when I want a screen bigger than my phone. I think because of all the problems with the edge, only developers and really patient people who want to learn about Android should bother with it. Or people who have close family that fit the above.

I've had several random problems with my edge, and I enjoyed the complexity required to fix it, but most people won't.

Just my 2c... Game Dev Story was one of the first games I installed after I got the market working. Has worked great I bought it when I had an ipod touch and was stoked to get it on the edge.

I DID have a random screw up like you experienced when I installed google music. That jacked my edge up bad.

But I agree with nikkie. You probably should just get a Fire or similar. I adore my edge and plan on keeping it till it breaks (and then getting another one), but it is definitely not a good fit for everyone.
