I just finished this Stephen King short story. Entertaining enough to keep me reading all the way through; which I don't do very often!

I bought it on pre-release, but still haven't gotten around to read it. I'll probably get to it on my next short plane trip

That was exactly what I thought. somehow the ending didn't live up to the rest of the book. And who was the governess really? A ghost? Giles' mother? And did she really walk on water and appear in the mirrors? I do like to have the ends tied up (boring I know, but hey if I want to make the decisions I might as well write the book).

I recently finished A Christmas Carol. It was part of Lost by Gregory Maguire. I have yet to start the actual story of Lost. But I will eventually.

I wondered if she was the ghost of Giles' mother? I half expected her to be a figment of Florence's imagination and that Florence was mad. But I totally agree, it didn't end well for me and that bothers me somewhat. I too like to have all the I's dotted and T's crossed and it just didn't happen. I did love the book up to the last few pages really. Apparently it's loosely influenced by The Turn of The Screw which i read years ago so am now going to re-read because I'm anal like that. I'm sad about F&G because for me, then ending spoiled what I thought was a fantastic book. I thought Florence's language was extremely well done. |

It is, but don't miss out on the other four Christmas Books that Dickens wrote. There seems to be a tendency these days to think that "A Christmas Carol" is the only one. He wrote five of them. Until the early 20th century another of them, "The Cricket on the Hearth", was better known and regarded than "A Christmas Carol".

Apparently Dickens wrote the rest after the success of A Christmas Carol, one per year for the holidays. While A Christmas Carol was completely original, the rest were basically variations on a theme and a bit derivative. And once the five were done, he still continued to write Christmas stories each year for his magazines, also variations on a theme. All four books after A Christmas Carol were bigger initial sellers than the original, but that is largely due to the immense success of the original and the way it entrenched itself and the want for warming Christmas stories into the culture. This introduction does not mention that The Cricket on the Hearth was better known or regarded than A Christmas Carol. There was a time when Dickens himself went out of style with literary critics near the end of the 19th century, but it seems that A Christmas Carol has always been one of his best known works, and has always been his best regarded of the Christmas stories (this is all according to the introduction I'm reading). You may know more than me on the subject and if so please correct me, but I found it interesting seeing your post while currently reading on the subject. |

After reading about them here on MR, I tracked down the first two "James Potter" books. They're not quite J.K. Rowling, but the first book isn't bad at all so far, and seems like it could actually be part of the Potterverse.
Oh, and it's the first book I'm trying to read entirely on my Kindle Fire, so far so good, even though I probably should have set it aside while I was cooking. A light dusting of cornmeal doesn't seem to have done it any harm. ![]() |

Recently finished Brisingr by Christopher Paolini
Recently finished Inheritance by Christopher Paolini I recently began Who Will Tell the People? The Betrayal of American Democracy, by William Greider, but I'm finding it difficult to continue. I'm familiar with most of the critique, and it's depressing. The book sat on my shelf for years, and I decided I should either read it or get rid of it. Will soon begin A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens for the mobileread book club. |

I finished Boyd Morrisons, _The Catalyst_. While it was a good book you could tell it was his first effort. But, I would still recommend it.
Boyd's later books are much better, and I still feel _Rouge Wave_ is the best of his that I have read. I started reading _The Inverted Cavern_ by another MR author Member Todd Fonesca. This is the second in his Time Cavern series. They are "young reader" but I enjoyed the first and hope this one is as good or better. BOb Last edited by pilotbob; 12-12-2011 at 11:09 AM. |
