Your New Cybook--Confidential

I've been reading this forum for a while, and there are a few things I would have *dearly* loved to know when I first got my cybook, so I thought I'd put them in one place.

1--ALWAYS use the Safely Remove Hardware button when removing the cybook or the SD card from the computer, and wait for it to say it's safe. If you don't, the computer may not be done transferring info onto the flash memory and that can cause corrupt files. (This may not prevent corrupt files, but not doing it...)

2--Make a back up of the service files, in case somehow they get erased from the cybook. I'd say do it immediately and put it on a DVD so it can't get erased or corrupted. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for Bookeen to help you instead of reading.

3--Reformat the SD card to FAT32, the file system in the cybook, if it isn't already. This seems to help the cybook work with the SD card.

4--The SD card is inserted with the contacts facing the front.

5--The power bar is not accurate for the first several(I don't know how many) charges; it has to calibrate itself. Just be aware that at '40%' the power may be almost gone.

6--When the battery is out, the screen remains on the page it lost power on. It takes power for the cybook to *change* screens, not stay on them, so you won't be able to turn the page, go to the library or anything. Just charge it for a while and it'll be fine.

7--Pushing the reset directly shuts off the device, it doesn't clear the screen. Visibly, it turns off the LED. Turning the cybook back on will cycle the firmware.

8--If the cybook is having problems, try taking out the SD card; some cybooks only like certain cards. It's unclear what the problem is or why they like one card and not another.

I hope this makes using a cybook easier. Does anyone else have things they would have liked to know at the beginning?

I keep trying to put books on my Cybook, but after the 5th book or so they fall over. Does anyone have an idea how I can get the books to stay on my Cybook? I was thinking duct tape.

Also, I tried to add a dictionary but after I put it on the Cybook I can't see the screen anymore. Can someone help me?

Duct tape *always* helps. As does fabricating a set of front and back supports to keep it in the upright position. You might want to build a "shelving unit" which mounts to the top via a plug for the SD card slot.

True story, back in one of my incarnations as a young geek at a dedicated computer retailer (remember those: Entre, Computerland?). I explain to the kind lady that a hard drive can hold up to 20 3.5" discs worth of information.

Cut to a week later - Bob the hardware tech, with a huge grin, showing me 2 discs jammed into the disc drive and the service ticket, "customer claims hard drive is full and doesn't hold claimed 20 discs".

I thought I saw somewhere that Bookeen already sold a sturdy metal Cybook frame. They obviously anticipated this issue.

The one place to put things is in the wiki and then tell people to check there. It doesn't get stale and is easy to update and reference. there is already a wiki page in two languages to contain this data.

Just for one tiny moment there, I thought I was in the Lounge...

Perhaps just slightly better than PEBKAB.

"Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Brain".

Suppose you *could* go with that, but the sound of PEBKAC (PEHbuhkaaKUH) is so revolting, whilst your version invokes visions of some sort of pedi-cab taxi.

I thought it was PICNIC: problem in chair; not in computer.

That's another one. PEBKAC, PICNIC and ID10T are the most popular problems that most software has.
