				pdf on K3 3G

			Hi,

I just got my Kindle. For some reason I thought it would be a great pdf viewer, but after reading on here I guess that is not the case. I have a few books in the PDF format I'd like to read on my kindle. Can somebody fill me in on what are the better approaches to putting the books on the kindle. They are often technical books with math equations or code in them. I'm a debian / ubuntu user so windows solutions don't work well for me. Thanks! |

I'm afraid that there really IS no good solution. Such technical documents will not convert well to other formats, and there's really no good way to view them on a 6" eInk device. Sorry.

Does the DX work better for this purpose? Also I read in another form that someone converted the pdf into half page landscape PNG's . Does that work well? All I care is to be able to read the PDF's. I don't care if the text is converted or searchable ( that would be a bonus, but you don't have that feature with a regular book either ).

You can use a tool like http://www.pdfscissors.com/ (web tool, no installation needed) to remove margins and, optionally, cut up pages (if the text is still too small, use landscape mode.). I do it all the time with technical papers/books, the procedure makes them very readable on my Kindle 3.

Of course, it would be better if you had LaTeX (or docbook, etc) source for the books, in that case you could generate PDF formatted specifically for the small screen. I do that with papers from arxiv.org with very good results. |

Best solution I found was to let the K3 display the PDF normally and to wear a pair of "reader" magnifier glasses. Most pharmacies have a display rack of them...take your Kindle along and try it out.

No, it isn't elegant. But rotating the screen to landscape and magnifying wasn't terribly elegant or satisfying either. I really wish that Amazon would convince me that the DX is not a dead end, because I think a large format PDF reader would be terrific. |
