Currently I'm about halfway through the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. Prior to that I read the Riverworld series (through book 5) by Philip Jose Farmer.

I'm also reading Audition by Barbara Walters, Girls Like Us by Shelia Weller, A Freewheelin Time by Suze Rotolo and Positively 4th Street by David Hadju.

Also nibbling at Ed Wood: The Early Years and The Tragic Clowns about Chris Farley, John Belushi and Lenny Bruce.

The last is a free download here: http://www.memoware.com/?screen=doc_...9430&back=main

It seems that my conversion from pdf to imp for Mistborn did a strange thing: Every word that has the letters "fl" or "fi" shows up as "?". Not slowing me down, because I'm already on page 75, but it seems to be a ?uke or arti?cial artifact from when I was just learning to ?esh out the formatting.

However, it is suf?ciently easy to read, so I'm not going to try to re-?nish the format conversion again.

Have a ?ne weekend! Don't take any wooden squirrels!

Sounds like a kerning issue. In some fonts fl and fi are a single character. So, your convertor doesn't know what character to use there so it puts in a question mark. (I think this is called kerning.) Can you convert to the same font that the PDF is using?

It is a PDF issue.

If you try to convert this PDF to HTML then import this file to BD all of ff, fl and fi will be missing. I had the same problem with other PDF files in the past.

Since I bought my Kindle, I have mostly read SF and Fantasy on it. I'm catching up on older SF that I've downloaded from MobileReads, and more recent books available from Baen. (Would you believe that until this year I had never read a book by David Weber or David Drake?) And until recently, I had shied away from most Fantasy. Now I've read the Deeds of Paksanarrion trilogy, downloading the first book from the Baen free library and then purchasing the trilogy so I could read the other two.

But not to leave any of the other genres out, I have downloaded a ton of Young Adult fiction, mysteries, romances, and "classics". I'm currently reading Emily of New Moon by Lucy Maud Montgomery, uploaded here by Justy. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading the book -- and I've got both sequels loaded on the Kindle ready to read.

Unfortunately, though, it's not available as an e-Book - is it?

Speaking of which. Is someone keeping tabs on all book editors and their e-publishig availability? I guess it would be quite a task but a nice feature to MR.

Well, a quick search doesn't find them at any e-Book site, however it's likely they *will* come out in electronic format since the original paper books (Surrender None, and Liar's Oath) and the Omnibus edition (The Legacy of Gird) were published by Baen.

Finished Lord of Light.
Very ambiguous feelings. Book's ideas are quite interesting and some things that are voiced are..just wise. At the same time I didn't like the language. It sounds old fashioned, just like Earthsea. His Amber books that I loved a lot were different. And too many names...and a bit too serious...seriously!

Started Book 3 of Crown of Stars by Kate Elliott. Burning Stone.

It's funny, Astra, because you know my opinion of Lord of Light (how much I liked it)? Well, I didn't like Earthsea either, and it's one of the few books (well, I had The Earthsea Quartet as one book) that I've had to put aside. It's odd, because if there was anything "old fashioned" in its language, that would not tend to be something that would have me put it aside, but I'm thinking it may have been the language that did it for me with Earthsea.

I'm pretty sure I've still got it somewhere in my bookcases, so I'll have to go have another look.

Quote:

Lord of Light was the first book I have read of his. I have, naturally, been curious about the Amber series, helped by the fact that they've been gathered into a single book. I wonder if they've been ebooked (I will check later, after this post perhaps)

Quote:

Fair enough. You've mentioned the "why" of this, and I totally empathise.

Quote:

I've seen Kate Elliott on the shelves, but never picked up a book. I'm currently onto The Yiddish Policemen's Union and after that I've a few books on Australian Aboriginal Mythology to read, and then I'll jump into Terry Dyson (well, I will if Twilight Beach turns up), and then the dreaded Proust novel and then perhaps some of the HarryT-provided Dickens. Kate Elliott is probably a little far away for me to be able to say I'll pick one up and see what it's about.

Cheers,
Marc

I hated Earthsea. I forced myself through all 5 books just because it is considered to be fantasy classics. One of the wors fantasy series I have read. (Astra hides quickly behind his Sony reader from Nekokami who loves it...).
Crown of Stars is not the best of the best of fantasy...but nice No regrets so far.

The Great Book Of Amber - is one of the best fantasy I have read so far One of my favourites.
