Are they still taking orders though? I find it hard to believe they would be running out already. Maybe there was a supply chain problem.

It's the SO keyboard version that is out of stock. The keyboard Kindles are being phased out. Soon enough, the other three models will also be gone.

I suspect that it's simply a case of manufacturing volumes for the keyboard models having been reduced. The keyboard models have been in and out of stock at the Amazon UK store several times over the last couple of months. At the moment, the 3G model is in stock, but the WiFi model isn't.

Are the keyboard and touch models manufactured at the same place? I also think keyboardproduction was probably cut back in order to meet demand for the new models. But I do fear that eventually keyboard and DX will be discontinued. I'ge decided to go aheadand purchase a back-up kindle keyboard.

My K3 will soon become a backup and something to loan to guests. I've always disliked the keyboard and will be glad to get rid of it as my primary ereader.

They are not taking orders for the SO K3. The page has a link to people who are selling them in the Amazon Market. There is no information about a restock date or potential ship dates.

Since the DX is no longer even listed on the "Kindle Store" main page or when you click on "Buy a Kindle" button, I went ahead and bought a back-up unit when they were on sale for $259. I fear it will be allowed to die.

That's exactly how it's been on the Amazon UK site, but the Kindle model involved has come back into stock again. It happened with the 3G model a few weeks ago.

They are till being sold. I actually am the proud owner of a KKSO since about 10AM today. I cant keep my hands off the thing. So other than target that most people name, Staples sells them too.

I do think that it won't be that long before the KK is no longer available for sale. From what I've read about the K4, it's a different enough system and it may be true that KF8 won't work with the KK/K3. So I do think once KF8 is out, most people getting a Kindle will want one that handles KF8. And if I am correct, that will mean not the KK/K3.

The K4 non-touch is pretty much, almost exactly, the same system as KK's. Only the Kindle Touch system is different from the other's.

Welcome to the board. Re the comment right after your post by JSWolf, on the upcoming KF8 file format, this is mostly to support things like graphic novels and advanced mathematical symbols. Based on what Amazon is putting out, this is not something that will make the K3 eReader both you and I own obsolete. Here's how Amazon is explaining the transition to publishers:
