![]() I'm about 1/2 way through the first Chanur novel and it's a lot of fun. Hard to keep in mind what all the characters look like sometimes and most of the crew don't have very fleshed out personalities, but still a good read. |

The Star Trek Titan series has a lot of non-human characters. It's a very good series.

The dolphin book was pretty slow, and really the whole first trilogy, while reasonably entertaining, is useful mainly as setup for the second trilogy, which is hilarious and mind-blowing. The best of the Uplift books was probably Brightness Reef, the first book of the second series.

Julian May's Galactic Saga of Pliocene Exile - a four book series. I'm about halfway through the first one on audiobook now and it's fantastic. The eBooks were just re-released. Fair warning: I heard there were some scanning errors in the eBooks, not sure to what extent.

Two scenarios where Earth is being colonized by a spacefaring species:
Eric Flint and K.D.Wentworth "The Course of Empire" + "The Crucible of Empire". The first is available free at http://www.webscription.net/p-88-the...of-empire.aspx Harry Turtledove's Worldwar/Colonization series. In the last book we get to see Home, the home planet of The Race. |

CS Friedman: In particular This Alien Shore. She's probably better known for fantasy, but I prefer her SF work.
Julian May: I've just finished Orion Arm (2nd in series starting with Perseus Spur) and about a month ago read the first in the Galactic Milieu series. Frustratingly, the library here has books 2/3/4 of the Exiles series and last time I checked I was geo-restricted from buying the ebooks. Ursula Le Guin: I've enjoyed all of her work that I've read, although haven't read TLHoD. |

I wouldn't say LeGuin has a unified writing style. I've only read a short story from Earthsea, and wouldn't touch the rest with a ten-foot pole, but the Hainish Cycle features some of the most outstanding works in science fiction, including LHoD.
