I will just say this : if men were the ones supposed to give birth, the human specy would have been a very, very short lived one....
Pain is a sensation, as such everyone has a different relation to it and the limit of what is bearable is absolutely variable from one person to anther. Add the fact that some women have wide hips, some not, some babies have big heads, some not, some anesthesists are very talented, some not, and you soon realize you can't make an equation out of the giving birth experience. Prof: you should do what you feel comfortable with and choose your own way. None of us here is entitled to telling you what to do, it is your boat, and you are the captain ! |

Here another story about pain. A good friend of mine, 35 years old was sick, cervical cancer T4 N1, dying and very much in pain. She had weeks, at the most 2 months to live. She was getting morphine, but they refused to give her a morphine pump because she could become a drug addict. The irony....
This made me, and still makes me, terribly, terribly mad. |

My pain story: When I had my (abdominal) hysterectomy last February, my doctor was very intent on pain control. (I love her.) When I came out of surgery, I had a morphine pump along with an On-Q system which feeds anesthetic directly into the incision for a couple of days. I did great. Sure, it hurt to walk around, but knowing I had this great pain control thing I knew it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. I hardly had to use the morphine, plus it made my blood pressure too low so they took it away. Fast forward a couple of days when she came in to remove the On-Q tube: it was CLAMPED OFF! Apparently after she put it in place following the surgery, someone on the surgical team clamped it off temporarily to do something to the dressing, then forgot to unclamp it before zipping it into the little pouch. My doc was furious, and raised a huge fuss. The thing is, though, that I didn't KNOW I wasn't getting this great anesthetic dripped continuously into my incision, and only a couple of times did I think the pain was more than it should be. Placebo effect is very real.

The last 3 births that I have been involved with in the last 4 years have all been C Sections, and they all went very well for all concerned (2 Big Daughter (37 on the last one) and 1 Big Girl, 42). It is very frequent here in Italy and object of much debate. Just a number. In 2008, the biggest hospital of Milano, with 6790 babies per year had 41.62% of CSections. In all cases were the doctors to take the decision. The professionals. I strongly advise father to be to stay away from the delivery room. I have seen friends remain under shock for months after that, to the advantage of nobody. I got the impression that us men, we are not just equipped for that. It might be better to keep our manly resources to be of help after the event. Then, it is the time to share the burden. Some of us are so lucky to have women that do not feel the need to underline our inferiority at every occasion

We are aiming for not a C section and will only have one if the Dr indicates it is needed.
