Yes, it's illegal - or at least, it's copyright infringement (a civil matter, not a criminal one). Fan fiction is what copyright law calls a "derived work", and you can't create derived works without the permission of the copyright holder of the original work (with a few exceptions which count as "fair use"). Even when the author decides to turn a blind eye, as appears to be the case here, it doesn't alter the legality (or rather the illegality) of it.

Depends what "supported the novel" actually means. I suspect that she might change her tune should the author attempt to publish the books commercially.

As suspicions go that's a pretty safe one. However Lippert claims that he's not going to do that and calls the series his hobby. What I've been attempting to do by starting this thread is to try and champion the idea that this series is not copyright infringement (I suspect that you might say and I agree, as long as it stays free) and the author's intent is to make access to this series free of any charges. I'm hoping that you moderators will allow discussion of this series to continue and also back off on the thing about not sharing the various sources url's.

One other clarification please. People seem to say this fairly often, "see Apprentice Alf for help concerning....blah". So saying "see about that on Goodreads" is ok, just no url to goodreads.com? Or is it just no url directly to a download of this material on goodreads.com?

Yesterday, in another thread, I saw a word that is new to me, Potterverse. The poster indicated that these James Potter books seemed to belong in the Potterverse and I agree.

I am currently reading the first one, and it is quite good. Lippert is a strong writer with a vivid imagination, and it is rare to encounter fan-fiction of this quality. I also look forward to reading his new non-Potterverse novel once it is out in epub. For some reason it is only available in mobi for now.
