Please tell me I have not ruined my eReader

I've been perusing these forums for a bit today, trying to figure out how to use Calibre's content server to update some news on my reader. Found the thread and sorted out what I needed to do, which included installing PRS+ as an alternative to the factory firmware.

Installed, all seemed to be going well, could access the content server, etc. Then I decided to look at some of the other features of the firmware and clicked on a game (yes, I heard it was unstable, but I didn't do anything on it, just saw the interface and then backed out). Finally, I clicked on the Calendar. It appeared to drop out of the list for a moment, and then I got a screen that was blank with "Undefined" in the top left corner (with a "back" arrow). I tried multiple times to click the back arrow to no avail, and putting it to sleep and waking it up again merely resulted in being brought back to the Undefined page. Lastly, I turned it off. (Interestingly, the calendar interface -- which had never appeared -- now appears on the screen as if it is a background/screensaver). I now can not turn it on. ![]() I tried to uninstall, but since it won't turn on, the uninstall .exe doesn't pick it up from the usb connection. I'm sick to my stomach thinking I've bricked this thing...any ideas? suggestions? stiff drinks?

Ok...I have solved the problem by soft resetting, which then allowed me to uninstall PRS+. Oh well, my calibre content server was nice while it lasted (about 10 minutes), but I think I'll wait for a little more stability.

I've never had a problem with instability, and I think PRS+ is a must have if for nothing else than to load better fonts than the default Sony font, which looks terrible on an e-ink screen compared to say, Caecilia Bold. But I have never tried to use Calendar or Games either. They are supposed to be very unstable on the 950.

Yes, there have been problems reported with PRS+ games and the calendar with the 950. (I have a 350 and games and the calendar have been working perfectly for me so far.) If you reinstall it, just avoid using the games and calendar for now, it's not why we all bought an ereader anyway, and you should be good to go with the rest of the great features of PRS+ and the content server.

And I think the problem with games in 950 can be corrected in not a far future.

Admittedly, I'm as bad as my kids (where "don't do that" is translated as "Hmmm, I think I'll do just that as fast as I can"), and I had fair warning. That said, there was a new release just last week, and I am wondering if that had anything to do with it. I guess since I know I can back out now, even in the worst of circumstances, I *could* try it again...

I have played checkers, chess and chess puzzles without a hitch. But the only way to use the content server is with PRS+ installed. The pluses of PRS+ far outweigh the fact you must not touch the calendar app. I've been using PRS+ on my 505 (almost 3 years) and 950 (3 months) virtually since the day I received each. PRS+ is rock solid for everything else and future releases will, if not fix the instability, allow you to remove the unstable menu items so you aren't tempted to touch them. Of course you could install version PRSP_950_2.0.14beta.zip. It doesn't have some of the code updates seen in 2.0.16rc but the calendar works. |
