In Switzerland Downloading Copyrighted Materials for personal Use is Legal

http://torrentfreak.com/swiss-govt-d...-legal-111202/ The report notes that downloads don't decrease the budget that the individual uses for entertainment, therefore, it assumes that the entertainment industry is not harmed. Last edited by emellaich; 12-02-2011 at 09:29 PM. Reason: Title typo |

Also here in the Netherlands downloading music, films and books for personal use is allowed. Our government was planning to make it illegal, but just this week a large majority of our Parliament spoke out against this change. But discussions are still going on.

How large is the Swiss entertainment industry? They probably have little to lose. Why would the Swiss government care if foreign companies are possibly harmed? The only ones affected would be Swiss retailers but I guess many Swiss buy much of their entertainment online anyway. |

We have the same stuff in SA, I've always thought it to be very sane. Though as mentioned, a lot of the new US entertainment lobbied law export attempts are trying to remove it - not that it'd make a bit of difference.

its amazing how simple yet logical that rationale is. if i sold "illegally" obtained or counterfeit material then thats piracy. imo copyright infringment is a bs term that they made up because they can't technically nail you for piracy but theyve gotta get you for something, just like the police use disorderly persons when theres no real law that was broken. |

There's a country out there that upholds laws beneficial to their citizens instead of corporations ? Get out of here Is there any confirmation from other sources that this news is real ? Last edited by Quexos; 12-03-2011 at 03:39 AM. |

This is a sad day for those who make their living from IP. The Swiss government is essentially saying "we don't give a damn that our citizens are stealing from you". Very disappointing.

Why should they be sad if the amount of money people spend on entertainment does not change? By fighting piracy artists only decrease their popularity.

That is a flawed argument. If someone downloads my program without paying for it, should I say "Oh, but the person who's stolen this program from me has gone out and bought someone else's program, so that makes it OK?"

The Swiss have always been evil. Just look at what they've given us. Cheese and chocolate and army knives... all are bad for your health. |

It makes no difference because statistically another person who stole someone else's program bought your program.

This is the sort of argument the corporations make where they equate every download as a lost sale, when plainly it is not. Good to see that lie shoved back into their collective faces, at least in Switzerland. |
